This year I have been presented with 'Crowd Management Plans" written by safety officers with no crowd safety experience (it added uo to 83 words in total) A security plan that doesn't have any CT or contingency planning, a major event in which the head of security is unable to write a Crowd Management plan nor did they have ANY experience of running events this size and, a company who's planning is done remotely and the author doesn't actually visit site. it seems lately I am reviewing other peoples planning docs more and more and I have to say it doesn't bode well for our industry, that's right I said industry ...... we are not security although there is undoubtedly and element of security we are not part of the safety team. Crowd management is an industry, a specialty and in some cases a gift but in all cases it requires lots of study backed with years of operational experience, umpteen mistakes uncountable near misses and millions of deep sighs of relief after a safe, "successful" event. A good crowd management team can change the complexion of the event entirely. When done well you would never know they're there and that's exactly how it should be. the person who plans the event should be there to lead it and the security team thoroughly briefed to ensure correct application. Security companies that add "crowd management" to their website without the qualifications, proper planning capabilities, capacity for correct application and commitment to the process should face prosecution under the trade discription act I hope the Boardmasters incident is reviewed properly and its findings published so the "industry" can learn from its findings and. we can continue to ensure our kids come home safe in one piece!

While all injuries were minor, this incident is a stark reminder of the critical importance of crowd management and safety measures at large events. I had the pleasure of chairing our panel on Creating Accessible Spaces at our Pecs Drag Kings festival. Examining the challenges and successes of accessibility in the cabaret and performance industry. I was joined by the ever wise Amelia Cavallo of Quiplash, Cassie Leon and Miggy Barker. Some highlights from the panel that I took away included; ⭐️ Access does cost money, and trust takes time to build so develop your access strategy over time and master what you can do well and be honest about that. ⭐️Just because you’ve made progress doesn’t mean the work is over. ⭐️ Be honest with bookers about what is actually possible. Allow them to meet you where you’re at. ⭐️Let venues know that access is a priority for you and your audience. We need more accessible DIY and cabaret space.
