In 2018, Whispp was born out of a simple but powerful idea: to give people with voice disabilities the freedom to communicate confidently. The founders, Joris Castermans and Akash Raj Komarlu, were inspired by their personal experiences and conversations with those affected by vocal impairments. They realized that traditional assistive technology wasn’t enough, as tools relying on speech-to-text conversion were often slow, lacked nuance, and couldn’t capture the natural flow of a conversation. This led us to create something new: a real-time, audio-to-audio solution that would convert whispered or affected speech into a clear, natural voice. Real-Time Assistive Voice Technology. “For us, Whispp was always about creating something that could bring people closer, giving them back the ease of everyday conversation.” Over the next few years, our team poured its energy and expertise into making this vision a reality. We designed Whispp’s AI-powered technology to work across phone calls, video chats, and messaging, ensuring users could communicate instantly, without the latency that disrupts everyday interactions. It was challenging, but knowing the impact this technology could have kept us going. Fast forward to 2024, and Whispp is now recognized as one of TIME’s Best Inventions in the Accessibility category. Each year, TIME’s Best Inventions list honors innovations that significantly impact our lives, highlighting extraordinary breakthroughs in categories like Accessibility, Healthcare, Artificial Intelligence, and Green Energy, with nominations from TIME editors, industry experts, and an online application process. TIME evaluates each entry on several key factors: originality, efficacy, ambition, and impact. This ensures the chosen inventions are unique and genuinely enhance how we live, work, and connect. Assistive technology (AT) plays a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life for billions worldwide. Eyeglasses, one of the earliest forms of AT, have long been indispensable for improving vision. Similarly, wheelchairs offer mobility to those with physical disabilities, while hearing aids and cochlear implants open up the world of sound to those with hearing impairments. Globally, over 2.5 billion people require at least one assistive product. With an aging population and rising noncommunicable diseases, this number is expected to reach 3.5 billion by 2050. Interestingly, some AT devices, like the typewriter, were originally invented for the general population. The typewriter's design directly inspired the invention of the first Braille machine, introduced by Frank Haven Hall in 1892. Today, keyboards are integral to many assistive technologies, aiding individuals with various disabilities in communication and productivity. Even though I present daily for my day job, there's something about tomorrow's talk that feels different. There's been zero nervousness while I've been adding some final polish--just pure excitement. I was asking myself why this is the case while I took my (still) cute-as-heck pup on our walk. Is it the venue (I've never been)? Maybe. The chance to meet some new and familiar faces? For sure (I love meeting new people, it fires me up). But more than all these things, when I was practicing with one of my friends who works in healthcare, she said, "I never even thought about people with seizures and motor disabilities" and how they interact with digital apps. That's what excites me the most: this belief that EVERYONE should be able to access your content, regardless of health or cognitive conditions. And that first step into this world of accessibility starts with awareness. Swinging by tomorrow? Digital space is a hugeeee thing nowadays, and it should be easy to include Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, Hard of Hearing, and Late Deafened people. Technology nowadays is amazing, innovative, and adaptable. On Global Accessibility Awareness day, you can start now... how? I got you. 1. Educate yourself. Ask your followers how you can make your content more accessible. Participate in workshops, go to conferences, and more. 2. Make your content accessible! Some examples are alt text, captioning, image and video description, and transcription. 3. Advocate with us. When you see a post that isn't accessible, go ahead and comment and ask them to make it accessible with suggestions how they can improve their post. Including us in digital space allows us to have a seat at the table, thrive, commit to being inclusive together, and most importantly -- connect.]

Today starts National Disability Employment Awareness Month. As someone who has navigated the professional world as a blind founder and CEO, I know firsthand how important it is for persons with disabilities to have more than just entry-level opportunities. It's not enough to stop there—we need to create high-quality, mid-level, and senior positions for professionals with disabilities, where they can thrive and lead. At VisioTech.co, I have dedicated my life’s work to making this a reality. Through the boards I serve on, our company’s cutting-edge initiatives, and partnerships with leading organizations, we are working relentlessly to build accessible pathways to leadership and growth. We also believe in equipping companies with the tools they need to be inclusive—this includes frameworks like the Accessible AI Quotient, which we’ve developed to guide organizations in creating truly inclusive environments. I'm grateful for the partnerships and collaborations that make this work possible, including the North Texas Disability Chamber, where I serve as an executive board member, and the National Disability Institute, for which I have participated in several panel discussions and projects, appreciating their commitment to financial inclusion and literacy for professionals with disabilities. I also want to acknowledge the Blind Institute of Technology where I was a student. They provide invaluable education and training for blind and low-vision professionals, helping them gain certifications and secure employment. We’re proud to have worked with the Dallas Regional Chamber on the development of their accessibility toolkit, which VisioTech supported, and to be a Disability:IN certified disability-owned business, further driving our commitment to accessible business practices. Let’s continue to push the boundaries together. Let’s ensure that every person, regardless of ability, has an equal opportunity to succeed at every level.
