Recent water infrastructure emergencies in Atlanta underscore the growing concern I’ve had that we’re not doing enough to integrate with the ecological systems we’re part of in urban design and planning. I’m hoping my sustainability colleagues out there can share some inspiration. I am encouraged to see that LEED v5 seems to be shifting toward a greater emphasis on preservation and restoration. I’m proud that Georgia is in the top five U.S. states for number of LEED buildings; however, we need to push hard on innovation for watershed health and resilience which is critical for climate resilience as well. In Metro Atlanta, we have an amazing system of colleges and universities that should be engaged to the fullest in defining problems and creating integrated solutions for ecological resilience in the context of cities. And we need to stop settling for less in how our communities get built.

In our pursuit of progress, we often overlook the silent wisdom of nature. 'A River Called Titas' serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between urban development and environmental preservation. As professionals, how can we incorporate this awareness into our work and decision-making processes? Let's discuss strategies for sustainable urban planning and environmental conservation in our industries. #SustainableDevelopment #UrbanPlanning #EnvironmentalLeadership

In her master thesis, Victoria Pasternak from INFRASTRUKTUR & UMWELT Professor Böhm und Partner is looking at key factors to develop industrial and business areas in a way that they comprehensively emphasise sustainability in urban development. Today, in an online roundtable with IB-Green partners, such as Lisa Puissant (Lille European Metropolis), Anna-Christine Sander (Hessisches Landesamt für Naturschutz, Umwelt und Geologie), as well as Fernanda Pinto Godoy and Ger Corbett (both Sandyford Business District), we discussed about what the future role of IBPs should be. We are looking forward to reading the conclusions from Victoria's research project and seeing how to best use them for #IBGreen 👏 #climateadaption #climateresilience #environmentaljustice

"So, the story goes – the industrial development does not align with the stated environmental goals in the plan – but also, the land use change in the area show that the city has longer history of neglecting environmental goals." Our latest blog delves deep into the contentious balance between urban expansion and environmental preservation. Highlighting the disconnect in the LEAP Innovation District and beyond, we explore how recent developments, like the controversial industrial project, clash with long-established environmental goals. 🔗 Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gEYZZuNk

Understanding the interaction and interplay between human societies and the natural environment seems essential nowadays. Analyzing social-ecological systems helps to comprehend this complex relationship, and highlights the interconnectedness and mutual dependence between human activities and ecosystem functions within a landscape. Embracing the concept of co-evolution within SES underscores the dynamic nature of this relationship, emphasizing how societal actions shape ecological conditions and vice versa. In landscape planning and design, acknowledging this connectedness is crucial for fostering resilience, sustainability, and well-being in both human and ecological communities.

I’m pleased to share our latest publication in Local Environment: 'Learning with compost: digging down into food waste, urban soils and community.' 🌱📘 Our paper explores the emergence of a ‘composting ethic’ in community initiatives across Sydney and Canberra. Key insights: 🔸 Three forms of learning that animate this ethic: 1. Noticing and attending. 2. Embodying. 3. Experimentation. 🔸 Contextualises findings with environmental humanities and First Nations perspectives. 🔸 Examines ways to reduce environmental impacts and support anti-colonial practices of discard. Practical implications: 🔹 Potential for policymakers to support and scale community composting. 🔹 Opportunities for urban planners to integrate composting in city design. 🔹 Framework for thinking about waste management and soil health differently. It's a real highlight to publish alongside my phenomenal PhD supervisors, Bethaney Turner and Ann Hill. While my contribution was modest, the opportunity to collaborate on this research has been invaluable. This research aligns closely with my work on urban policy, climate resilience and community-led solutions. It's amazing to see how local initiatives can reshape our relationship with waste and urban ecosystems. Link to the full open-access paper is in the comments. #UrbanSustainability #CommunityComposting #ClimateResilience #ResearchImpact
