I’m pleased to share our latest publication in Local Environment: 'Learning with compost: digging down into food waste, urban soils and community.' 🌱📘 Our paper explores the emergence of a ‘composting ethic’ in community initiatives across Sydney and Canberra. Key insights: 🔸 Three forms of learning that animate this ethic: 1. Noticing and attending. 2. Embodying. 3. Experimentation. 🔸 Contextualises findings with environmental humanities and First Nations perspectives. 🔸 Examines ways to reduce environmental impacts and support anti-colonial practices of discard. Practical implications: 🔹 Potential for policymakers to support and scale community composting. 🔹 Opportunities for urban planners to integrate composting in city design. 🔹 Framework for thinking about waste management and soil health differently. It's a real highlight to publish alongside my phenomenal PhD supervisors, Bethaney Turner and Ann Hill. While my contribution was modest, the opportunity to collaborate on this research has been invaluable. This research aligns closely with my work on urban policy, climate resilience and community-led solutions. It's amazing to see how local initiatives can reshape our relationship with waste and urban ecosystems. Writing a book sometimes feels like navigating through a dense, endless field of towering grass—challenging, disorienting, and requiring a clear vision to find your way. When I set out to write #ClimateAnthologie, I knew it had to be more than just a textbook. It needed to be a tool, a guide, and an inspiration for those working at the intersection of climate action, research, restoration, collaborations and sustainable livelihoods. One section that stands out is in Chapter 8, where we delve into the intricate dance of Cross-Border Environmental Restoration. So in the book, there are a million research prompts, and here’s one 👇: How do regional partnerships like the ARCOS Network successfully navigate the complexities of restoring shared ecosystems like East Africa’s mountain regions? What lessons can we learn from Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) models in incentivizing sustainable practices while ensuring community well-being? This chapter challenges readers to think about scalable solutions that balance policy (transboundary), ecology, and livelihoods. To the incredible team at ARCOS Network: your work continues to inspire, and this is my small way of celebrating it. #Leadership #Sustainability #CrossBorderRestoration #EastAfrica #EcosystemRestoration #ClimateActionHandbook #Livelihoods #Biodiversity #ClimateAnthologie #SoonToBeOut #Innovation

ENGAGING COMMUNITIES IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION Engaging communities in environmental education involves creating programs that empower locals to understand, appreciate, and protect their natural surroundings. This process includes interactive workshops, field trips, and educational materials tailored to local cultures and languages. By fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility, communities become active participants in conservation efforts, contributing to the preservation of vital ecosystems like the Sepik Wetlands and Peatlands. These initiatives not only raise awareness about environmental issues but also promote sustainable practices that benefit both people and the planet. Through collaboration with organizations like Sepik Wetlands & Peatland Limited, communities can develop the knowledge and skills needed to safeguard their environment for future generations. #EnvironmentalEducation #CommunityEngagement #ConservationAwareness

Conservation is in the midst of an evolution. Today, the most successful conservation projects are those that are co-created with local communities that derive benefits from the ecosystems they steward. Nature’s contributions to people’s well-being and prosperity are being better understood and incorporated across policy, business, and finance. To make inclusive conservation the norm, we must recognize the intertwined and complex relationship between people and nature. This means we need to get comfortable with seeing people and signs of people in protected areas. Shifting norms and changing perspectives within the conservation community may be difficult, but it’s critical to moving in the right direction. Learn more: https://wwf.to/42ASMYi.
