As we approach 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟎, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒, Thomas Smith Shipping is committed to prioritizing mental health in the workplace. This year's theme, "𝑰𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝑻𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒛𝒆 𝑴𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆," emphasizes the critical connection between our work environments and overall well-being. At 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐒𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠, we recognize that a supportive workplace fosters mental health, enhances productivity, and contributes to a thriving organizational culture. As we spend a significant portion of our lives at work, it’s essential that we create spaces where employees feel valued, respected, and supported. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐞: • 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔: Encourage open discussions about mental health to reduce stigma and create a safe space for sharing experiences. • 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒆 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒔: Share mental health resources and support systems available within our organization. • 𝑷𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒍𝒇-𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆: Prioritize personal well-being through mindfulness, exercise, and taking breaks when needed. • 𝑨𝒅𝒗𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆: Support initiatives that promote mental health policies and practices in our workplace. Let’s unite this October to raise awareness and take actionable steps toward a healthier work environment. Together, we can make a difference! #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthMatters #EndTheStigma #MentalHealthAwareness #YouAreNotAlone

Mental Health - a relevant topic every single day. Working for a company which puts employee wellbeing on the agenda and makes resources available to support wellbeing is uplifting. What do you do to take care of your wellbeing every day?
Today is World Mental Health Day. It is definitely time to prioritize mental health in the workplace. But where should we put more efforts? While we need to support those who need help, my proposal is to prioritise *JOY* in the workplace. I know it is not going to solve every problem, and I am also acutely aware of the external context, but… McKinsey research very clearly demonstrated that how we behave at work is crucial for wellbeing. So it is up to ALL of us. Not just senior leaders, line managers, HR professionals - we ALL should be more intentional in making others feel seen and heard, make time to be together and share good moments, notice even small moments of positivity – even smiling faces in the elevator! – and become more aware of our own needs and boundaries… And crucially, build each other up publicly, celebrate even small achievements. All these small things will certainly help create more mentally healthy workplaces. And the added benefit is that positive teams tend to be a lot more innovative! So this month at PMI, we are on a quest for JOY at work with our internal campaign, run by our wonderful BeWell Champions (Christine Van Vuuren, Alexandra Chernova, Bernhard Merkel, Michael Kunst, Rajitha Raghunathan, Tassom Larpprasert and many others)!! And we are SUPER excited for our global webcasts on October 15th, when we will be joined by Bruce Daisley and Nataly Kogan to explore how we can bring more joy to our working lives, supported by a wonderful panel of our internal speakers - huge thanks for volunteering, Frederic Patitucci, Demian Pintos Labandera, Natalia Kurochkina, Richard Gould, Manuel Chinchilla, Masja H., Rajitha Raghunathan, Tassom Larpprasert – looking forward to exciting conversations, with lots of tips, ideas and JOY!!

I recently had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Ashley Whillans from Harvard Business School about a Harvard Business Review article she newly co-authored, which examines why workplace mental health and well-being programs often fail to deliver better outcomes despite growing employer investment: https://lnkd.in/ga5qSbg8. Dr. Whillans researches individual and organizational strategies to improve workers’ health and happiness, focusing on how time use at work and outside of work affects mental health. The clip below highlights our discussion on “carewashing” — a byproduct of superficial well-being initiatives — and addresses the research-practice gap, which reflects the disconnect between evidence-based recommendations and the implementation of mental health and well-being programs in organizations. As I look to uncover and address systematic barriers to employee well-being and mental health in my own research, this conversation provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities for creating meaningful, evidence-based workplace interventions. Thank you sincerely to Dr. Whillans for sharing her knowledge and time.

Mental health isn't just about dodging stress—it's about thriving amidst the daily chaos. In a world where deadlines, targets, and emails crash like a chaotic party, taking a breather and looking after our mental well-being are key to sustained happiness and success. I've had my fair share of late nights and those "caffeine-fuelled turbocharged sessions” that left me wondering if I had more coffee than sense! Balancing leadership with personal sanity has taught me to embrace my quirks and prioritise mental health. It's no easy feat—trust me, it takes constant reminders and the occasional nudge from everyone around. At TeleChoice, we're committed to making a positive impact right here in our workplace. As we gear up for our #WalkforMentalHealth Day on 1 October 2024, we're placing a special emphasis on supporting each other's burdens and embracing moments of joy as a team, all while staying true to our CLAP (Collaboration, Learning, Accountability, Performance) culture. For instance, we're injecting some fun into tough meetings by starting with a "chocolate-first" agenda item. We also regularly gather over coffee to openly discuss and tackle challenging issues, ensuring everyone's voice is heard. These "sanity checks" are just as crucial as achieving our financial goals and underscore our commitment to making mental well-being a cornerstone of our work culture. As we count down to the walk, we're preparing to unveil even more initiatives that will enrich our journey towards mental well-being, ensuring everyone at TeleChoice feels included and empowered. Each of us brings unique talents and personalities which enriched our company culture, and for that, we are truly grateful. Here's to raising our coffee mugs to good mental health, exceptional teamwork, and a workplace that is welcoming. Let's embrace a future where mental health care isn't just a checkbox—it's intricately woven into the fabric of our daily lives. Cheers! #WalkForMentalHealth, #CLAPCulture, #MentalHealthAwareness, #WorkplaceWellbeing

We all have a part to play—big or small—in creating a better society that cares for both people and the environment. I truly believe The Walters Method (TWM) is a toolkit for our times. It is more than just a mental well-being approach; it's about liberation—freeing our minds from constraints so we can be the change we want to see. Here’s why I’m so passionate about it... ✨ TWM offers a fresh perspective on releasing what holds us back and finding real purpose. It’s unlike traditional methods and brings new, powerful techniques to the table. 💡 It goes beyond clarity in the moment—TWM helps heal past trauma, resulting in profound shifts in how we think and feel. ⚡ In times of emotional distress or doubt, TWM offers immediate release. It’s been invaluable for me during moments of crisis and emotional upheaval. 🛠️ TWM empowers us with practical tools to take control of our mental wellbeing and stay on track, giving us the courage and certainty to make real change. Once we free our minds, we can focus on what truly matters. I'd love to speak to businesses looking to improve workplace wellbeing and through that, boosting engagement, productivity and retention.
