THE ENGINEER (UK) UKRI funding boost for Scottish offshore wind research A research programme featuring Edinburgh and Dundee universities and the Forth and Tay Offshore cluster has been awarded £2.5m by UKRI. 21 Nov 2024 Operating on the east coast of Scotland, Forth and Tay Offshore (FTO) is one of eight clusters set up to facilitate the UK’s ambitious offshore wind rollout. Alongside north Scotland’s DeepWind cluster – which is focusing on offshore opportunities in deeper waters - FTO will have a pivotal role in delivering the gigawatts of clean energy the UK will need to decarbonise the grid by 2030 and ultimately hit net zero.

🪁 Exploring the Future of #AirborneWindEnergy in the 🇺🇸! 💻 This week, we had a fruitful and insightful webinar with our IEA Wind #Task48 colleagues from the United States to highlight exciting investment opportunities for #AWE. With over 20 participants attending, it was a deep dive into the potential of #AWE in the US, backed by key players in the field. 🔑 Key Takeaways: 🗣️ Ian Baring-Gould from National Renewable Energy Laboratory kicked off the session on the financial incentives available for #AWE projects. He emphasized the opportunities through the IRA (Inflation Reduction Act), USDA REAP (Rural Energy For America Program), and additional tax credits, which provide significant support for #AWE development. 👉 Find out more about REAP: https://lnkd.in/eUfuXpG8 He then explained in more depth the "Competitiveness Improvement Project (CIP)", a program designed to support small and medium-sized wind energy manufacturers. Exciting news from Denmark! On Monday the Danish government officially launched its largest offshore wind tender in the country’s history, with the aim of ensuring that Denmark achieves its climate goals, while also becoming an exporter of green power. Set to be completed by 2030, the wind farms are crucial to ensure that Denmark meets its target to reduce CO2 emissions by 70 per cent from 1990 levels by the end of this decade. “Denmark is one large step closer to becoming Europe’s green powerhouse” said Lars Aagaard Minister for Climate, Energy, and Utilities. The government has made available six sites and it will be possible to construct at least 6 GW with a maximum capacity of 10 GW or even more. Once completed, these wind parks also enable Denmark to produce more green electricity than domestically required, which means that Denmark can potentially support fellow European countries meet their green targets. This could involve, for example, the generation and exportation of eco-friendly fuels for aviation and shipping through power-to-X methods. This announcement comes at a time when Energy Cluster Denmark with the support of IIT Madras Research Park (IITMRP), ICDK Bangalore and The Trade Council of Denmark in South Asia is working on the INNOWIND project. INNOWIND aims to facilitate a cluster-to-cluster connection with the overall focus on identifying and facilitating opportunities for collaboration on Offshore Wind (OFW) development in India in close collaboration with an experienced Danish OFW industry, thereby supporting the development of the Indian OFW industry. In October last year, Denmark announced the Wind Alliance India (WAI), a strategic initiative to drive innovation, knowledge exchange, and investments to propel the growth of wind energy in India. Leading Danish and Indian organisations joined the alliance along with the Embassy of Denmark in India, demonstrating the Green Strategic Partnership (GSP) in action. This latest announcement by the Danish government only helps to establish Denmark's forefront position in renewable energy and represents a noteworthy achievement on our path toward sustainability. Two pioneers of #RenewableEnergy have been honoured with the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, often dubbed the "Nobel of Engineering." Denmark's Henrik Stiesdal and the UK's Andrew Garrad have been recognised for their groundbreaking contributions to #WindPower technology. Stiesdal laid the early design principles for wind turbines, including the revolutionary "Danish concept," while Garrad developed crucial software for optimising turbine and farm designs. Their work has not only changed the landscape of renewable energy but has also paved the way for wind power to become a significant player in today's electricity generation mix. The expansion of #WindPower has been fuelled by factors such as government incentives, declining costs, and growing environmental awareness. Key drivers behind the surge in wind energy capacity include innovations in turbine design, such as taller towers and longer blades, which are maximising #energy output and efficiency. 🌊Researchers aim to store wind energy in rivers flowing uphill 🌊 Can we store the energy from Danish offshore wind turbines in Norwegian rivers by pumping the water up mountain slopes when it's windy and then letting it gush back down when we need more power in the electricity grid? An international research team is set to investigate this, and the EU is investing DKK 40 million in the project Store2Hydro.   Our colleague, Corneliu Barbu, is one of the driving forces behind this project, based on an idea that came about in a coffee break during a symposium ☕️. He says about his expectations for a future where Scandinavian rivers can become giant batteries for Danish wind energy: "We face a major challenge in developing an intelligent and integrated supply system capable of handling huge amounts of wind energy. We especially need large-scale solutions that enable both long-term and short-term storage of the power we produce. And we need these things urgently. As a researcher in this field, I feel a certain responsibility to contribute to the development of new and innovative solutions that can help the green transition."
