Today at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, stakeholders came together to explore pathways for advancing #GreenHydrogen development, with a special focus on de-risking and securing financing for Power-to-X #PtX projects. The session "From Risk to Reward: Boosting Private Investment in Power-to-X Projects” aimed at tackling one key challenge in the sector, mitigating risks at various stages of project development, in order to unlock greater private sector investment as a way to scale up green hydrogen projects globally. Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)’s State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth, together with Economic Adviser to the President & Green Hydrogen Commissioner of #Namibia James Mnyupe, highlighted the importance of collaborating to overcome these risks through partnerships. Luc BAGUR, Director for Sustainable Development Policy and Coordination at the European Commission, underlined how crucial de-risking hydrogen projects is for developing the hydrogen economy. On behalf of GET.invest, #FinanceCatalyst Team Leader Paul VAN AALST presented the programme’s offer for green hydrogen clients in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, with a project in Barbados reaching financial close earlier this year. Through its #FinanceAccess Advisory, GET.invest provides tailored and independent transaction services to support developers in structuring their business plans and in arranging financing at various stages of development, from concept-stage to commissioning. Italy has players that can position themselves internationally and SMEs specialized across the entire hydrogen supply chain, but it is necessary to enhance support tools for these companies. As our country stands at the forefront of the technology for a sustainable energy future, it's crucial to define also a clear national strategy to attract investments and accelerate project implementation. Investments can be financed by PNRR funds that Italy has to use along with the development of IPCEI projects. It is also essential to fill regulatory gaps to ensure a clear legislative and regulatory framework for project development. These are the topic I covered at a roundtable on green hydrogen organized by the Embassy of Denmark in Italy and European Energy. Together with Cristina Maggi from H2IT - Associazione Italiana Idrogeno , I delivered a presentation on the healthy Italian hydrogen supply chain and the key initiatives that can propel Italy’s hydrogen sector forward. Financing the Green Economy: The Hydrogen Cases of the Nordics The ambitions for the future role of hydrogen in a net zero scenario are high. On national and international level alike, strategies have been announced setting targets for electrolyzing capacity several 100 times higher than what is currently installed. In the Nordics as well as Europe, the private sector has been following up on these strategies, developing concrete project plans corresponding to - or even exceeding national and European goals. Only a small fraction of these projects have however made it to the final investment decision (FID). Even fewer are under construction or have already been commissioned. Making hydrogen projects bankable and achieving a #FID have proven critical hurdles for the European Hydrogen Economy. Key factors include securing partnerships with established stakeholders and demonstrating both technological feasibility and market demand. During the New Energy Coalition event #WindmeetsGas2024, visitors to our common #NordicsNL session got to hear 4 successful recent cases from the Nordics.
