𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀: 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗔 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗹 by Cleantech for Europe Last week, European #leaders called for a “new European competitiveness deal.” The reasons are clear: a new #report led by Enrico Letta on the #SingleMarket highlights a range of #challenges facing our #economy, including fragmented #capitalmarkets, unfit #competition rules, international #cleantech competition, and the need to dramatically increase public and private green #investment. Only days before, EVP Maroš Šefčovič took stock of the European Commission’s Clean Transition Dialogues, highlighting the #critical need to boost the #competitiveness of our clean #industries. The case for a renewed #strategy of competitive #sustainability by the #EU with these industries at its heart is stronger than ever. Europe’s cleantech industry could be the driver of this competitiveness deal. Over the last decade, #Europe has gained technological #leadership in #strategic #sectors, from #electrolysers to #batteries, from #windturbines to #greensteel. Innovative #SMEs are striving to scale these #technologies and bring industrial leadership to Europe. However, between #unfair competition from #Chinese #manufacturers, and a #heavilysubsidised #US market, European #companies are at a disadvantage. If Europe fails to scale #strategic clean technologies, we will lose our technological edge and weaken our #energysecurity. The Net-Zero Industry Act (#NZIA), which is being voted on Thursday, 25.4, is a step forwards, but lacks key elements to make Europe “the home of cleantech manufacturing”. And the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (#STEP), itself a downgraded #SovereigntyFund, failed to draw support from EU leaders, leaving a significant cleantech investment gap unfilled. We, the under signed, as cleantech #innovators, #researchers, #civilsociety, #industry #associations and #investors, are calling on you not to let the EU’s cleantech journey end with the #NZIA - and to enact a Cleantech Competitiveness Deal with the following p#riorities: ✅️ Invest at scale now-Europe needs a Cleantech Investment Plan ✅️ Concrete Action Plans for Cleantech Manufacturing in Europe ✅️ Plan for the future- A vision for the next generation of cleantech breakthroughs Without #investment and a new strategic #vision Europe will fall behind in the cleantech #race, risking our future industrial and climate leadership. As we approach the European #elections in June, we call on #candidates across #parties to get serious about securing Europe’s cleantech future. Let’s make cleantech the #successtory of the next five years, and the driver of a re-energised, competitively sustainable Europe.

Here is my new op-ed entitled "Strategic collaboration is the key to Europe’s cleantech resilience", just published by EIT RawMaterials: https://lnkd.in/dtiEPz_F This opinion piece is a reworked, English version of my previous op-ed for De Tijd, entitled "Europe must protect e-car manufacturers and battery companies like Umicore" [https://lnkd.in/enzTrQH8]. 👉 Why this op-ed? In the mine-to-EV value chain, even cleantech icons such as Northvolt and Umicore are now facing difficult times. Not long ago, the debate was about two other aspects. Problem number one was that Europe was at risk of being flooded by much cheaper (heavily subsidized) #electricvehicles (BYD et al) from China who face an overcapacity crisis at home. Problem number two was, and still is, the lack of supply security for the input materials for European EV battery companies, given China’s near-monopoly position for many refined CRMs. The fact that the debate is now shifting to the problems faced by battery players like Northvolt and Umicore shows that Europe is now in an even deeper malaise than a year ago. 👉 What now? We are no longer living in the 1980s. Ann Mettler, VP of Breakthrough Energy , stated: “it makes no sense to continue promoting an open trade policy that allows subsidised products (such as EVs and batteries) from abroad into our markets while being excessively strict on state aid at home.” We now live in a ‘post-Western world’, characterized by protectionism, resource nationalism and increasingly hostile conditions. The new EC will have to take a different approach. With the upcoming #CleanIndustrialDeal, there is hope for improvement. But it must be aimed at stimulating (at least partially) made-in-Europe EV/cleantech production, incl. future #recycling. 👉 Strategic alignment Above all, there is a need for more strategic, long-term alignment between upstream, midstream, and downstream players in the mine-to-EV/cleantech value chain. Silo thinking must be abandoned in favor of a vertically-integrated, comprehensive long-term strategy. This requires a change in mentality among the government, companies, and investors. 👉 Read the Op-ed, EIT Raw Materials, here: https://lnkd.in/dtiEPz_F 🎬 Want to know more? 💡 Cleantech for Europe Scaleup Coalition Joins Innovation Fund Conference on Driving Sustainable Innovation 💡 Packed day at CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency's #IFCleantech conference, with speeches from European Commission EVP Maroš Šefčovič, EU Environment and Climate Director General Kurt Vandenberghe, and the leaders of cleantech scale-ups from across Europe. The need to scale up cleantech emerged as key to Europe’s economic competitiveness, energy resilience and security. In a keynote address on the topic of deployment and scaling up cleantech manufacturing, Vaitea Cowan, co-founder of Enapter, made the case for simpler and better public funding for cleantech manufacturing, in particular by focusing urgently on de-risking instruments which can help European innovators to compete on a level playing field by freeing up precious working capital. One clear theme from the day: the role of ambitious policymaking to massively increase funding for the most promising clean technologies in Europe. In the words of Kurt Vandenberghe, “We have made the regulatory case. Now, we need to make the business case." Left this impressive conference uplifted by the broad consensus around the need for speed, scale, and simplicity for the competitive sustainability and resilience of Europe’s manufacturing base. The ramp up of capital-intensive cleantech manufacturing is tricky, and the government has an important role in enabling the long-term framework conditions that catalyze the needed private investment. It is cheaper to keep an industry in Europe in the first place than to attempt to reshore it once it has been lost, so the implementation of non-price criteria in auctions and public procurement calls will be key, among other things - we need to find the right balance between cheap, good, and fair. The EU is getting serious about how to decarbonize each sector and what it will take to get there - exploring avenues to support projects, such as the Sovereignty Seal, Auctions-as-a-Service, and new blended finance products such as public counter-guarantees to address working capital needs of cleantech manufacturing scale up. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, and I really appreciated DG CLIMA’s Kurt Vandenberghe closing on a Seneca quote to much the same effect: “It’s not because things are difficult that we don’t dare, it’s because we don’t dare that things are difficult.” Huge thanks to policymakers leading the way on this topic Paloma Aba Garrote Maroš Šefčovič Roman Doubrava Kerstin Jorna Alex Paquot Jacek Truszczynski Katrien De Marez Ruben Devogelaer Also fantastic to link up with the cleantech community in person Vaitea Cowan Christopher Frey Per Sonesson Ola Hansén Julia Altenhofer Pierre-Louis Delon #EU #Cleantech #IFCleantech
