Unveiling the importance of child rights protection in schools, our latest case study from Anekal block, Karnataka, authored by Anna Daniel (Research Manager) and Malavika Acharya (Program Design Manager) in collaboration with SNALC (Social Norms and Agency Learning Collaborative, South Asia), highlights the need for supportive disciplinary practices. It explores students' perspectives on child abuse and punishment, revealing a cultural contradiction where children are both cherished and subjected to harsh disciplinary methods. The study highlights the emotional and psychological impact of these practices on children and emphasizes the importance of shifting societal norms to protect children's rights. Here we go again! Every available hour of a child, even during summer vacation, is booked by parents and school leaders, with a clear tilt towards academics! “When all other kids in our apartment complex are playing outside, our children are going to school. Fearing that the school may target the children, we decided to be quiet” the parent of a student at a school in Rajajinagar, as per the news article by Deccan Herald. The good news though is, parents of students in such schools have raised objections and approached the Karnataka School and College Parents’ Associations’ Co-Ordination Committee, requesting to take up the issue before the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR). - Was this example an exception? - What if the majority of parents don’t speak up, or school leaders don’t take action? Me and Saumil Majmudar dig deep into this topic in our latest newsletter from "Get Kids To Play", please follow the link below https://lnkd.in/d5zsBpWb

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has called for a major shift in the education landscape. In a letter to all states and Union Territories, NCPCR Chairman Sh. Priyank Kanoongo has recommended the discontinuation of funding for Madrasa Boards and their eventual shutdown. The move also includes a proposal to transition non-Muslim children currently enrolled in madrasas to mainstream schools, ensuring alignment with the Right to Education (RTE) Act of 2009. Priyank Kanoongo said, “The commission has studied this issue for the past nine years and researched how children from the Muslim community are deprived of school education due to madrasas, detailing the violations of their rights. We have sent a report on this matter to the Chief Secretaries via letter and requested them to close the Madrasa Boards in their respective states. These Madrasa Boards have failed to serve the purpose for which they were established.” This recommendation aims to promote inclusive education and equal opportunities for every child across the nation. Working for the empowerment of children can be a challenging yet insightful experience. One demotivating observation in this journey is that children are often not treated as major stakeholders in discussions about child rights. They are frequently seen as subjects to be controlled and monitored, with little say in the approaches adopted towards them. I have encountered the argument that there's no need to educate children about their rights because they might misuse them. However, it's essential to critically analyze this assumption and weigh it on a scale of benefits and losses. There should be a free flow of education among children to teach them about rights and wrongs. Most importantly, we need to have faith in our children. If an institution refuses to educate children about their rights out of fear that they might start claiming them and taking action, then there is definitely a need to step back and reflect on our actions as an institution. #childrights #education #righttoeducation #children #UN #empowerment

“Child Rights - Loss one, Impact on all” In 2006, the Committee on the Rights of the Child released a statement declaring that corporal punishment is a form of violence that should be banned in all contexts. The International Day to #EndCorporalPunishment on 30 April is an important, global moment to advocate for protecting children from violent forms of punishment - in all settings. Many countries have banned any type of corporal punishment, including spanking. Sweden became the first country to ban corporal punishment in 1979. Since then, other countries such as Germany, Japan and lasted country is Mauritius becomes 65th state that have made corporal punishments children illegal in all setting. Any Corporal Punishment violated Children’s Rights not just only physical or their rights to health, development, protection, education but also their mental and values as physical integrity, human dignity and freedom from torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. To Improve Outcomes to End Corporal Punishments for Children, we need “Public Policy” to banned the physical punishment of children in all contexts and settings together with running “National Parent Education and Campaign” around the topic. Throughout the implementation of Education and Campaign strategies, we need to addressing on the positive change as outcome of adult’s believe and social norm on this issue seriously. - A Itsaraporn 30.04.2024 - Credit Photo: Verywell / Nez Riaz

In a bold move to ensure every child in India has access to quality education, NCPCR Chairman Sh. Priyank Kanoongo ji has called for action. In a letter to Chief Secretaries of states and Union Territories, Kanoongo recommended that non-Muslim children enrolled in madrasas be transferred to mainstream schools, aligning with the Right to Education (RTE) Act of 2009. Based on a detailed report examining the educational conditions of Muslim community children, these recommendations aim to create a roadmap for fostering a safe, productive environment for every child. This initiative isn't just about education—it's about empowering the next generation to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress. “Currently, there are still over 1.25 crore children in madrasas with no connection to the Madrasa Boards. The Madrasa Boards are merely receiving government funding while accommodating 1.9 to 2 million children, including non-Muslim Hindu children, to create an illusion of educational support,” Kanoongo ji told the media. In a recent decision that has sparked considerable debate, the Cumberland City Council in NSW voted to remove books featuring same-sex parents from its libraries. It is seen as a regressive step that undermines the values of inclusivity, equity and diversity. As professionals and advocates for education and understanding, we must recognise the importance of representing all facets of our community in educational materials. The legal recognition of same-sex marriage and parenting rights is a testament to the progress made in recent years. It is crucial that our public institutions reflect this progress rather than regress to censorship. The removal of these books not only denies the existence of same-sex parents but also deprives children and families of the opportunity to learn about the diversity of family structures. Education is about broadening horizons, fostering understanding, and preparing our youth for a world that is rich in diversity. Let us stand together in advocating for a society where education is free from censorship, where all families are recognised, and where every individual can see themselves reflected in the resources provided by public institutions. The path forward is one of inclusion, not exclusion. #DEI #Censorship #Inclusion
