In a recent decision that has sparked considerable debate, the Cumberland City Council in NSW voted to remove books featuring same-sex parents from its libraries. It is seen as a regressive step that undermines the values of inclusivity, equity and diversity. As professionals and advocates for education and understanding, we must recognise the importance of representing all facets of our community in educational materials. The legal recognition of same-sex marriage and parenting rights is a testament to the progress made in recent years. It is crucial that our public institutions reflect this progress rather than regress to censorship. The removal of these books not only denies the existence of same-sex parents but also deprives children and families of the opportunity to learn about the diversity of family structures. Education is about broadening horizons, fostering understanding, and preparing our youth for a world that is rich in diversity. Let us stand together in advocating for a society where education is free from censorship, where all families are recognised, and where every individual can see themselves reflected in the resources provided by public institutions. The path forward is one of inclusion, not exclusion. #DEI #Censorship #Inclusion

Aisha Danlami, a 17- year-old girl and student of Gwallameji Secondary School, Bauchi, faces challenges in having to fend for herself and attend classes as a child with special needs. https://lnkd.in/dTRhuRyY As pointed out by our Change Reporting fellow, Charles Ugo Agwam, in this report, obstacles like the ones faced by Aisha have led to alarming dropout rates, poor academic performance, and restricted opportunities for girls and boys with disabilities in Bauchi State. Without a gender-responsive State Education Sector Plan (SESP), girls with disabilities would face endless daunting challenges such as inaccessible schools and classrooms, limited adaptive learning materials, untrained teachers, social stigma and discrimination, and financial constraints. By adopting GRESP principles, Bauch State can implement a gender-responsive SESP that can address the unique challenges faced by physically challenged girls.

Please help me fix this: "no primary age pupils should be allowed to use a different pronoun, without offering any explanation or evidence to justify this" You try telling me 8 year old son he is not a boy, just because he is primary age!! He has known who he was since he was 2! I know plenty of 40/50/60 year olds who still do not know who they are.....and don't start me on what classifies as evidence. Please help to change this guidance for our children today. Final day of the consultation! Suggested responses about the issues from trained professional with lived experience at Stonewalls link below: Updated Link for Stonewall Guidance: https://lnkd.in/ex_ANrZW Updated link for the government survey: https://lnkd.in/eybvTBb8
Everyone that knows me well in real life or on LinkedIn, knows that I try to be an advocate and ally to all marginalised or minority groups, whenever I get the opportunity, particularly with regards to access to education: #sustainabledevelopmentgoals The issue of better guidance for schools and universities into supporting our #transyouth and educating #cisgendered people is something super close to home, due to my 8 year old son. Dan is the brightest button, he pretty much taught himself to read between 4 and 5 (aided by a wonderful start with some amazing foster carers) and was reading Harry Potter etc when 5 in reception. He is smart, savy and always mathmatically making the most out of money and time 🤣 costing me a fortune. …However being a #transboy is holding him back, because with every new group of individuals he comes into contact with, there is that learning curve of what is and is not appropriate and that struggle for him to have to educate children and adults around him. 1 in 100 people/262,000 individuals do not identify with the gender they were assigned at birth in the UK! If you have any spare time over the next month, please read the stonewall guidance and respond to the governments consultation, so that they get the advice they need, to improve their guidance going forward to give all children better support, education and training for adults, to give trans children, a fairer support system to move forward within. According to Global Partnership for Education: - “If every girl received 12 years of education, child marriage would plunge… - If every girl completed primary school, maternal deaths would decline and communities would be healthier - A child whose mother can read is 50% more likely to live past the age of 5 and to be immunized - If all girls received 12 years of schooling, human capital wealth could increase by up to US$30 trillion and economies would prosper.” . As Cinie Williams-Ojeka, I am deeply committed and concerned about girls' rights, which are essential to creating a just and equitable society. Millions of girls are denied education, safety, and autonomy, and this must change. Education is key—129 million girls are out of school globally, limiting their potential to break free from poverty. Early marriage and exploitation affect 12 million girls annually, cutting short their dreams. We must advocate for stronger laws and work within communities to challenge harmful practices. Additionally, girls face violence and limited healthcare access, especially in reproductive health, putting their lives at risk. Protecting girls from violence and ensuring they receive proper healthcare is crucial. For me, Advocacy isn’t just raising awareness; it’s about driving real policy changes and societal shifts. When we invest in girls, we invest in a future of equality and progress. As a journalist, I will continue to use my platform to champion these issues, ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to thrive.

Dr. Ikechukwu Nwanze discusses why it’s important for disability to be included in the curriculum and in research at the University of Cape Town. Dr Nwanze discusses the four prevalent themes which came out of his Masters study, which were: 1. Achieving transformation through a change in the curriculum 2. Building and designing the curriculum for diversity 3. Creating a community of practice 4. Translating talk into action Including disability in the curriculum and research is pivotal for transformation as it promotes diversity and fosters a more inclusive society. By building and designing the curriculum for diverse needs and backgrounds, educational institutions can cultivate empathy, understanding, and innovative thinking among students and researchers, leading to a more equitable and accessible environment for all. “Disability is tightly tied to difference. Being able to understand difference, being able to understand how other people are, how different they are, how unique they are, pulling on their strengths and bringing that in, empowers the curriculum.” Title: How can we include disability issues in curricula at the University of Cape Town. Emily Eaton's Life and Legacy: Inclusive Education The inclusive education community lost Emily Eaton on April 13, 2024, much too soon, at the age of 40. Emily and her family leave the legacy of one of fighting for inclusive education when that concept was truly in its infancy in Canada. Emily and her family went all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada, more than 25 years ago, now. https://ow.ly/NV2o50RXb1Y Inclusion Action in Ontario (IAO) and ARCH Disability Law celebrated that milestone court anniversary in March, 2022, with an online forum bringing together Emily, her father, Clay Eaton, long-time President of IAO, the legal team and minds involved in the case, as well as educators and families making inclusive education a reality today in Canada. https://ow.ly/NV2o50RXb1Y Inclusion Action in Ontario continues to support families who seek inclusive education in their neighbourhood schools, in the regular classroom, on a daily basis. We recently joined forces with the University of Western Ontario in a research project, aiming to help more families learn how to advocate for their kids in inclusive education settings. Our research and work is now well under way. With Emily’s legacy in mind, we intend to keep on working towards the goal of a fully inclusive society and education system. https://ow.ly/AuoR50RXb1W #InclusiveActionOntario #IAO #InclusiveEducation #LegacyOfInclusion #EducationAdvocacy #DisabilityRights #InclusionMatters #InclusiveLearning

"Kids on Campus and its educators are helping to dismantle traditional gender stereotypes, showing children that teaching and nurturing are roles anyone can excel in, regardless of gender." 🎉 Wodonga TAFE have published a story on how they are leading the way in employing male early childhood educators. 🍼 Early childhood is a traditionally female-dominated industry. In 2021, the Australian Department of Education reported that 92% of all early childhood educators in Australia were female. ↗️ However, Wodonga TAFE currently employ 6 male educators, making up 22% of their #EarlyChildhoodEducation team. ✔️ By employing more male early childhood educators, Wodonga TAFE are helping to break #GenderStereotypes around #CareWork and provide children with diverse role models. 🖱️ Read the full story at 🔗 https://ow.ly/14pV50Ssya6
