Delivering the #UNIDO statement at the General Debate of the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States #SIDS4, UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller appealed for a new quality of global cooperation in supporting sustainable economic development in #SIDS: "There must be a clear signal from this conference: global solidarity with SIDS. The industrialized countries must deliver on their commitments: the 0.7% GNI development assistance goal and the loss and damage fund. The #IndustrializedCountries are responsible for 80% of CO2 emissions - not the SIDS. But only 1.5% of global Official Development Assistance is invested in SIDS, 1.5% - this is unacceptable.” He stressed that SIDS need a massive increase in adaptation funding, investments in economic progress and debt relief, moreover calling upon the private sector to play a much larger role in supporting and investing in #SustainableDevelopment in Small Island Developing States. DG Müller also thanked UNIDO’s partners – the Global Environment Facility and Green Climate Fund and the many great donor countries – for their support in fostering resilient economic growth in SIDS, noting that with UNIDO’s new Global SIDS Hub in Barbados, the Organization will be able to even better help SIDS on their path forward. SIDS face unique challenges. They are on the front line of #ClimateChange impacts, with coastal and reef ecosystems threatened and the coastlines themselves in danger, causing immense economic damage. SIDS are heavily dependent on expensive imports of energy, food, and other resources. The costs, particularly for fuel, are a serious burden on the development of SIDS‘ economies, which are often reliant on tourism and lacking diversification, hindering infrastructure development. Thus, while most SIDS are middle-income countries, 40% of them are struggling with unsustainable debt levels. Despite these challenges, there are also a great many opportunities for sustainable economic growth and innovation in SIDS, above all if given a proper chance with the right support. #blueeconomy #sdg9 #oceanenergy #climateresilience #renewableenergy

The Memorandum of Understanding between Sweden and Zambia under the Paris Agreement is a prime example of the growing collaboration between European and African nations in addressing climate change. This partnership, like Germany's renewable energy initiative with Morocco and France's solar power support in Senegal, demonstrates how these alliances can significantly reduce emissions while enhancing local energy systems and benefiting communities. In response, it's crucial for more West African countries to actively pursue similar collaborations. These partnerships not only help meet global climate goals but also drive local economic growth and build resilience. By seizing these opportunities, our region can accelerate its journey towards a sustainable and prosperous future. 😎 🌴 #ClimateAction #SustainableDevelopment #ParisAgreement #AfricaEuropePartnership #RenewableEnergy
Sweden and Zambia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on climate cooperation under the Paris Agreement! In parallel with negotiating a binding bilateral agreement regulating transactions of internationally transferable mitigation outcomes, there are also discussions about what kind of mitigation activities the Swedish Energy Agency can support in Zambia. Sandra Lindström, Head of International Climate Cooperation at the Swedish Energy Agency, says: "Together with our partner organisations, we aim to develop projects that provide large emissions reductions and at the same time affect the energy system in the country positively in the long term. It is also important that our efforts benefit the local communities and contribute to sustainable development." Johan Hallenborg, Ambassador of Sweden to Zambia, and Dr. Douty Chibamba, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment of Zambia, attended the signing ceremony in Lusaka. On Tuesday, more than 50 key stakeholders - among them government officials, academics, the private sector, civil society, researchers and experts on finance, energy and climate - convened in Nairobi, Kenya 🇰🇪 for a high-level dialogue on the global just transition and the need for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. 🌍 The discussion, co-convened by KCIC Consulting Limited (KCL) and the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative centered on the need for international cooperation to support an equitable and financed transition from fossil fuels to a prosperous future powered by renewables. The dialogue builds on other successful global roundtables held this year 🌐, that highlight the opportunity the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative presents for governments to build a credible and comprehensive pathway for economic, political and social transformation, that responds to the urgency of climate change whilst tackling barriers to prosperity. As African countries suffer disproportionately from the climate crisis and grapple with energy poverty, African nations need to participate in shaping the terms of the much-needed transition to renewables by joining the bloc of nations spearheading the Treaty initiative. A #FossilFuelTreaty is our best chance for a fair, financed and equitable transition. ⚖️💚 -- Prabhakar Vanam KCIC Consulting Limited (KCL)

🌍 On 3rd September, over 50 key stakeholders, including government officials, academics, private sector leaders, and climate experts, gathered in Nairobi for a high-level dialogue on the global just transition and the need for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. Co-convened by KCIC Consulting Limited (KCL) and the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, the discussion focused on international cooperation to ensure an equitable and financed transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The treaty, supported by 13 nations and endorsed by the European Parliament, WHO, and over 115 cities, aims to end the expansion of fossil fuels and accelerate the shift to clean energy. African nations, disproportionately affected by climate change, are being urged to join the global campaign and contribute to shaping the treaty. 👉 Endorse the proposal and urge your government to act at [fossilfueltreaty.org](https://lnkd.in/dC9a_ex). Thirteen Southern African Development Community Member States have called for the establishment of an international blended investment facility to unlock innovative finance solutions for long-term water security and climate resilience. The countries are developing a coordinated regional approach to climate-resilient water investment as part of the SADC Regional Climate Resilient Water Investment Programme (SADC -AIP): Climate Resilient Hydrological Cycle Observation System, funded by the Green Climate Fund. The region over-relies on external funding sources, including grants and official development assistance. The countries commented on the need to create sustainable financing solutions, such as climate resilience and water security funds, water impact bonds, green bonds for water infrastructure, blended water financing platforms and resilience bonds. The Swedish Energy Agency and Rwanda's Ministry of the Environment have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on emissions trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. – This is a first step towards establishing projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the energy transition in Rwanda. There are also great opportunities to simultaneously improve the conditions for local populations and contribute to sustainable development in the country, says Sandra Lindström, head of the unit for international climate cooperation at the Swedish Energy Agency. The next step is to negotiate a legally binding bilateral framework agreement on emissions trading between the two countries. – Rwanda has shown that it is possible to combine economic growth with ambitious climate goals. Through its initiatives in sustainable energy and green development, Rwanda can become a source of inspiration for other countries, says Martina Fors Mohlin, chargé d'affaires at the Swedish embassy in Kigali. #CohesionPolicy remains vital to address the needs of different regions and create a better life for all Europeans. We recently published the brochure Bridging Gaps: EU Cohesion Policy 2014-2020 which shows the results and achievement of Cohesion Policy from 2014 to 2020. Great news also for the #outermostregions. Cohesion Policy supported development in the regions in a wide range of sectors and encouraged cooperation with neighbouring countries with a total of EUR 8.8 billion. Some examples : 🛣 la Nouvelle Route du Litoral and the new terminal of Roland Garros airport in La Réunion; 🧒 a follow-up care and rehabilitation facility for children in French Guiana; 🏭 the first 100% renewable biorefinery in Gran Canaria; ⚡ a major energy power plant in Madeira. https://lnkd.in/e2ET99sc.
