🌍 BASF is expanding its Neopor production capacity by 50,000 metric tons per year at its Ludwigshafen site, which will have a significant impact on the energy-efficient building insulation market in Europe and beyond. Neopor, an expandable polystyrene (EPS) containing graphite, offers up to 30% better insulation compared to traditional white EPS. With Europe focusing on energy-efficient renovations and new constructions, products like Neopor® BMB and Neopor® Mcycled™ are well-positioned to meet the rising demand for sustainable insulation. The new facilities will begin operations in early 2027, enhancing BASF's styrene value chain and setting new industry standards. This move underscores BASF's commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability, aligning with the EU's goal of a climate-neutral building sector by 2050 and the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). A surge in demand for energy-efficient materials is anticipated in the coming years.

Cooperation on research and innovation (R&I), while results from joint projects will provide a good basis for potential industrial uptake and implementation. Norway was very active in EU Framework Programme for R&I - Horizon 2020 and continues to do so under the current Horizon Europe. Application of high environmental, social and governance standards and practices will be facilitated through mutual consultation and exchange of information on relevant policies and initiatives along the entire value chains, including recycling and waste management. Mobilisation of financial and investment instruments to support investment projects under the Partnership, notably through Invest EU, the European Raw Materials Alliance and the European Battery Alliance. Developing necessary skills for high-quality jobs in raw materials and battery sectors. Like many others I was in Sønderborg this week, accompanying my CEO Lars Petersson to discuss how to Power European Industry 💡 Thanks to Danish Industry, International Energy Agency (IEA), BusinessEurope and Danfoss for initiating this timely get-together 🙏   We do know that many of the technologies to decarbonise are already available today. So it was really great to not only have the chance to talk (and there is loads to talk about for sure) but also see what's already possible right now with site visits at Danfoss and Egernsund Wienerberger A/S 👀   With the implementation of the Green Deal files agreed in the last political mandate and the upcoming Clean Industrial Deal, we have the right tools at hand to get the framework and narrative right 🛠️   Looking forward to following up with concrete actions once the new European Commission is kicking-off its work. #Competitiveness is the buzzword in Brussels right now. How can European businesses like ours stay ahead in a rapidly evolving global market? One thing is clear: growth and innovation are tied to embracing the clean energy transition. We welcome Ursula von der Leyen's initiative to support sustainable growth through the new #CleanIndustrialDeal, which aims to strengthen Europe's net-zero industry by fostering an environment for clean technologies. At PepsiCo, sustainability is at the core of our business—from crop sourcing to product development—driving our efforts to build a better food system. However, to stay competitive while decarbonising, affordable renewable energy access, reliable grid capacity, and modernised grid infrastructure will be essential. A great example of how today we are already decarbonising through electrification is in our manufacturing site in our Broek op Langedijk in the Netherlands. To produce our Lay’s and Cheetos crisps in this plant, we are switching from natural gas to green energy stored in a thermal battery. This #innovation, made possible through collaboration with Eneco Belgium and KRAFTBLOCK, is reducing our carbon footprint while showcasing local partnership success. With a supportive Clean Industrial Deal that promotes the right policies, fosters ambitious partnerships, and ensures adequate grid infrastructure and capacity, projects like this will become increasingly attractive to European industry.

It is perplexing to see a movement actively opposing green battery manufacturing in Sweden. This initiative represents a significant step toward sustainable energy solutions and the fight against climate change. We should be supporting such ambitious projects rather than spreading ill-informed opinions that may hinder progress. Understanding the potential benefits—both environmental and economic—of green battery production is essential. I believe it’s time to unite behind these efforts, as they have the potential to create jobs, foster innovation, and contribute to a more sustainable future. Building up a new industrial sector from scratch is far from easy, and anyone who thought otherwise likely underestimated the scale of the challenge. Developing a new sector requires substantial infrastructure, capital investment, and a workforce with specialized skills. Regulatory frameworks need to be established or adapted, and there’s the constant push to innovate while navigating competitive markets. Moreover, creating a new industry means overcoming skepticism, securing stakeholder buy-in, and convincing investors to believe in long-term potential rather than immediate returns. It’s a process of trial and error, with risks that can derail even the most promising ventures. Unforeseen challenges—whether technological, environmental, or economic—can emerge, adding further complexity to the task. Yet, despite these hurdles, those with vision and resilience know that building a new industrial sector is transformative. It’s about shaping the future, redefining markets, and creating opportunities for growth that didn’t previously exist. No one said it would be easy, but the impact can be extraordinary.

Although the Czech Republic has recently made progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, there is still a lack of innovative solutions in the energy efficiency of building. 💡 Donatas Karčiauskas, CEO of Exergio, points out that the success of the Scandinavian models in terms of sustainable building practices and energy efficiency is unattainable without a solid understanding of effective management of energy systems in buildings. 🌟 Exciting start to #EnergyWeek2024! Yesterday, we were thrilled to host the Koppö Energia – Westenergy get-together evening. Together with CPC Germania GmbH & Co. KG and Prime Capital AG we presented the Power-to-X project in Kristinestad – Kristiinankaupunki – City of Kristinestad and our joint ECCU project to key stakeholders in the region. Westenergy is proud to be the pioneer of carbon capture in Finland in the waste-to-energy sector, which will allow us by the end of 2026 to: 🔹  Commission the largest carbon capture plant in Finland 🔹 Contribute to one of the most significant European power-to-gas projects 🔹 Provide clean energy and achieve high material efficiency through carbon recycling “This state-of-the-art carbon capture unit will make our waste-to-energy plant the most modern plant of this type in the world. It is an additional motivation to provide CO2 to the power-to-x plant and to promote the production of carbon-neutral fuel in Finland.” remarks Olli Alhoniemi, Managing Director at Westenergy. New EPA-funded research from the Green and Circular Economy Hub, led by Dr. Michael Johnson and team at the University of Limerick, has been released: Research 466: Forecasting WEEE Arising for Electric Vehicle Batteries and Photovoltaic Panels in Ireland. Globally, energy systems are undergoing two simultaneous and radical transformations that present a new set of challenges in sustainable waste management: the electrification of the transportation network and the decarbonisation of the electricity grid. This research identified challenges and modelled scenarios for the sustainable management of LongWEEE, i.e. electrical devices with a longer than average lifetime, with a specific focus on solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and electric vehicle batteries (EVBs). The research models the quantity of WEEE generated from both sectors out to 2050 and estimates the related cost of recycling. The aim is to help plan for financially sound and sustainable WEEE management into the future. The research also evaluated the merits of both “pay when placed” and “pay when collected” approaches to financing the collection and treatment of such long life products at end of life.
