ISO TC 279 - Innovation Management’s Post

Small Business Standards (SBS), in collaboration with ISO TC279/WG3 on innovation management tools and methods, is organizing two workshops and panel discussions to explain the standardization work being carried out by this ISO Technical committee and have an exchange with SMEs and SME representatives to better understand their needs and ensure the development of relevant International standards for SMEs. The ISO 56000 series of innovation management standards includes several standards such as ISO 56002 providing guidance on Innovation Management systems, ISO 56003 on Innovation partnerships or ISO 56005 on tools and methods for intellectual property management in the innovation process. A new standard, ISO 56008 on Innovation Operation Measurements will be published in May 2024. The ISO 56001 Innovation Management System – Requirements is currently going through final vote. In addition, Working Group 3 is considering several new standards to satisfy market needs for which it is searching for input from selected stakeholders to validate the quality and relevance of the proposed new standards. The two workshops therefore offer the opportunity to better understand the work of this Technical Committee and provide feedback on the existing and future proposals for standards in this area. This week, interested individuals, like Magnus Karlsson - Systematic Innovation Management and others, welcomed the publication of the much-awaited ISO 56001: Innovation Management Standard. In this note, I wish to reflect and share some of my experiences and expectations going forward... 11 years ago, I had the privilege to be invited by Mmakgabo Maheya from the South African Bureau of Standards, to participate in an ISO 279 plenary session in Dublin. At that stage, 53 countries where already represented in cooperatively working on the development of what is now referred to as the ISO 56001: Innovation Management Standard. From the start, I became aware of an overarching sense amongst participants to “work together for the greater good”. We were all in it to contribute towards the world of work becoming a more integrated and well-articulated system. Similarly, we were all concerned, in one way or the other, about the “roughness” regarding innovation within organisations globally. To achieve this milestone, there has been a lot of energy exchanges from different contexts around the world over the past years, on what innovation should be and how it could be incorporated as an integral part of being at work. The goal being to improve performance at work and to position innovation as a critical contributing factor to organisational success and sustainability.   The ISO 56001: Innovation Management Standard should, in my view, become an important key to unlock and re-direct the innovation journey at work, both within developing and developed socio-economic contexts. The world is becoming more “knowledgeable”, and I do hope that people at work will seize the opportunity to integrate, amongst other, the principles and guidelines related to innovation management at work. At this point, I wish to thank the colleagues from AFNOR and ISO TC 279 for guiding and assisting us as a global community to do this work over the past 15 years!

Number of participant: 213 "Mastering Innovation with ISO 56002 for Lasting Competitive Edge" took place, emphasizing the role of standardized innovation management in achieving organizational success. Co-organized by the HKIE Electrical Division and the Institution of Systematic Innovation, Hong Kong, the event featured Ir. Dr. Victor Lo discussing global innovation investments and the strategies used by countries to boost economic growth. He highlighted the universal challenge of innovation, akin to Darwin's theory of survival favoring adaptability over strength or intelligence, underscoring the need for proactive innovation. The seminar delved into the eight innovation principles of ISO 56000, offering a structured approach to managing innovation. It reviewed ISO 56002, stressing the importance of an Innovation Management System (IMS) in developing strategy, policy, and objectives, and implementing processes to achieve them. The speaker emphasized the value of professional innovation management training, aligned with ISO 56002 principles, to enhance organizational innovation capabilities. The event concluded with a Q&A session, engaging participants on applying ISO 56002 in their organizations. The seminar was well-received, with attendees appreciating the insights on standardized innovation management. Organizations are advised to adopt ISO 56002 to streamline innovation processes, invest in professional innovation management training, and prioritize adaptability as a core strength.
