As we commemorate Juneteenth this year, I want to take the time to reflect on its significance to me both as a Black woman and as a justice-impacted individual. This day marks the end of slavery in the United States, a pivotal moment in history that granted independence and freedom to countless ancestors. Yet, as we celebrate, we must also recognize that the legacy of mass incarceration continues to impact the descendants of those who were enslaved, perpetuating cycles of injustice and inequality. Independence is an incredible liberty, but for many, it still remains out of reach. The systemic issues that lead to mass incarceration are a reminder of the liberties still lost for many in our community. The harmful effects of these systems continue to reverberate, affecting families and communities. At CROP Organization, we are dedicated to reimagining reentry, focusing on creating pathways to success for justice-involved individuals. Our comprehensive approach addresses the many challenges faced by those returning home, providing support in areas such as housing, employment, and mental health. Our goal is to address the ongoing harm and build a future where full liberation is accessible to all — especially those escaping incarceration. WSD, Bear Clan partner to get students involved in neighbourhood patrols Bear Clan is the newest club in the Winnipeg School Division, joining the ranks of extracurriculars ranging from basketball teams to LGBTTQ+ alliances. None of the lunchtime or after-school activities at R.B. Russell Vocational School had stood out to Kaylan Wellwood before the spring. It was then the now-Grade 12 student first joined a North End patrol, alongside peers, teachers and community advocates clad in high-visibility vests. WSD and the Indigenous-led organization, which has a peacekeeping mission using a non-confrontational and harm-reduction approach, are partnering to help more students find a sense of belonging at school and volunteer in their community. R.B. Russell, located at 364 Dufferin Ave., is running daytime patrols every other Tuesday afternoon. Children of the Earth High School launched a similar collaboration last week that will see teens invited to craft upcycle mittens and patrol on Thursdays for the remainder of the academic year. At Modern Widows Club, 61 new #widows completed our Widow Empowerment Quiz last month, where we ask two additional questions: 1. After becoming widowed, did you seek support from your place of worship, if you have one? 2. If you answered yes to the above question, was the support you received sufficient? Only 6 replied YES to both. The fact that so many places of worship are insufficiently serving widows highlights a significant issue in advancing widow support. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Supporting widows is a biblical mandate, as James 1:27 clearly states that true religion involves caring for the #fatherless and #widows. It's time we encourage our places of worship to fulfill this essential part of their religious responsibilities. Donald Trump's budgets cut earned benefits, which ensured that families could care for children and grand-children. Of the fifteen states with the highest child poverty rate, twelve voted for Donald Trump. Of the fifteen states with the lowest child poverty rate, eleven voted for Biden. On maternal mortality rates, of the fifteen states with the highest maternal mortality rate, twelve voted for Trump. Of the fifteen states with the lowest maternal mortality rate, thirteen voted for Biden. They fall over themselves, grand-standing about protecting families and kids, and yet they vote against childcare. They vote against early education. They vote against universal pre-care. They vote against child tax credits. They vote against IVF, which is the only way for millions of American families to even create families. They vote against SNAP, where half the recipients are children. They vote against Medicaid, where, again, half the recipients are children. The notion that Republicans care about families is undercut by quite literally everything they do in practice! But, that aside, I'm sorry but I'm just so f**king tired of Republicans telling people how we should or shouldn't live, or that our lives aren't valid, if we don't comport ourselves in whatever narrow-minded world-view is espoused by some dwindling faction of far-right extremists: that we can't have non-biological parents; that we can't get reproductive care; that we can't get family planning; we can't go to the doctor's office; we can't travel between states; we can't read certain books; we can't identify how we want to identify. All underscored by the fact the party seeking to control our lives is the same party that brands itself the party of small government.
