I'm PUMPED about this book from the young authors at 826 Boston. I love reading these pieces with my toddler... full of amazing life lessons, for both me and him. Here's some of our faves: 💰 📚 "If you are kind/ You will find/ Friends, if you are a scholar/ You will earn a dollar/ Or many..." 🖍 "My friends ate some crayons and my friends are 7 years old and I am 5.... My friends left school because they got sick. Lucky me, I didn't eat crayons. I didn't get sick! So do not eat some crayons even if it looks yummy." 🌑 💡 "It's normal to be scared of the dark, so be as brave as you can be. If you think you are scared of the dark, it's because you're afraid of the future and what's going to happen next. You can solve that by remembering that not everything in movies, the Internet, or TV shows is real. Most scary shows take place in a dark room." ✍🏼 "Write down your passwords and usernames on pieces of paper to remember them." 💔 "Loving your mom is the most important thing because she takes care of you and you should value her now because one day she will get old and disappear." 📝 "Mi consejo sería que los niños aprendan a escribir sus ideas y sentimientos para sentirse mejor." ("My advice would be for children to learn to write down their ideas and feelings to feel better" .... talk about the spirit of 826!)

Really interesting, relevant and thorough overview of reading and young people. I've never come across the term 'volitional reading' before but it broadly equates with my practise/approach: wide and rich reading opportunities within YA, allowing agency for kids in the process. https://lnkd.in/epNy_Z8t (If you can't access the journal SM me!) https://lnkd.in/epNy_Z8t

I'm finally getting around to shifting platforms. So I'll be posting papers and updates and observations and salacious gossip (well, maybe less so) on here from now on. Starter for 10 My latest paper 'Educating the Temporal Imagination' - has just been published. It's about how the way we think with time shapes the way we approach problems and imagine solutions - and the many different ways we could teach our kids (and ourselves) to reflect on this. I lay out 5 different approaches to teaching with/about time and then make the case for what I'm calling 'temporal pedagogy' - as a reflexive use of this repertoire. 🤔 How do equity and the science of reading work together? As school doors open across the country, and children and educators alike return, there's been quite the buzz around the science of reading. Where is the overlap between equity and the science of reading? While understanding this science helps educators implement teaching strategies that enhance reading skills from an early age, CLI is compelled to put our critical lens to the discourse around the science of reading. We know that learning to read is a complex process and requires a multifaceted approach, so how can educators bridge that gap for children? Learn all about it in our latest white paper! 📑 Our experts provide a deep dive into the topic in "Equity and the Science of Reading". Download your own copy at https://hubs.la/Q02NdZ9b0

This chapter shows how devastation can be elegantly wrought! Essential reading for an articulate account of the state of higher education today
#HE4Good Robin DeRosa wrote the opening chapter of Higher Education for Good – ‘Writing from the wreckage: Austerity and the public university’. It is a devastating account of the state of higher education today, offering a powerful and beautifully written starting point for all of the chapters that follow. Link to chapter: https://lnkd.in/ecNfQicf “I will take a page from scholars, artists, writers, and activists who, before me, have recognised that the systems that enveloped them were causing such harm and violence. I offer the wreckage, exposed for what it is. For me, as it was for James Baldwin and Adrienne Rich, diving into this wreckage is a gesture of hope… We must use all our critical reading skills to free ourselves from the lies we are being told and sold and tap into our humanity to design what comes next.” Link to open access book: https://lnkd.in/eJNcfnei (Edited by Laura Czerniewicz & Catherine Cronin)
