Honoured to have contributed to the opening session of the Fifth Winner conference in The Hague to share experiences on our cooperation and impacts in our collaborative project with IT Bandung in our project on regional energy transitions in Indonesia generously funded under the #MerianProgram by NWO (Dutch Research Council) and the Indonesian government in a project jointly led by prof Kornelis Blok, TU Delft | Technology, Policy and Management en prof Harkunti Rahayu, Institut Teknologi Bandung. I argued that our scientific collaboration did not only lead to joint cutting edge scientific results for the Net Zero Emission 2060 ambition of Indonesia, but equally important also to joint and mutual capacity building for the energy transition among researchers, students, policymakers, and professionals by our combination of research, stakeholder engagement, training and education. My conclusions were as follows: • Cooperation needs face-to-face and exchange trips • Stakeholder engagement important for impact and understanding complexity • Early career and students/education are key building blocks for the future • Collaboration good basis for follow-up & spin-off • Impact oriented research funding like the Merian program essential, as without the Merian program none of our activities and results would have been achieved.
