Why Foreign Companies don't like to come to Nepal? Reason# 1223648499007778 My experience with Trademark Registration office is absolutely horrific. The first trademark we got for our brand took us 3+ years from the date of registration which includes multiple new registrations, amendment, and so on. Now we are again in the same boat. The Office of IP Registration now wants us to withdraw our application just because the new brand and selected code doesn't align with the objective listed on our Department of Industry Registration whereas the objective has been listed on our registration at the Office of Company Registrar. I don't know why different offices of the government cannot recognize each other's approvals and decisions in the first place. Why the need to register at multiple places? Isn't the hassle to register at OCR, Local Level, IRD and the compliances that come with it enough already?? Really Really getting tired of toiling our ass off in this land and having to fight hard for almost everything even if it is your right. Lawmakers should really think of facilitating the existing business in the country before they BS about increasing foreign investment. #smh #trademark #IP

We kindly want to inform you of a significant update regarding trademark registration in Lebanon. As of February 1st, 2024, the Ministry of Economy and Trade in the Lebanese Republic has announced a temporary suspension of receiving trademark filing applications. This decision comes as a response to the substantial backlog of pending trademark registration applications, primarily attributed to ongoing strikes. The Minister of Economy and Trade has determined that this temporary measure is necessary to address the situation effectively and avoid potential complications stemming from the recent increase in governmental filing and registration fees outlined in the official budget law of 2024. The suspension of new trademark applications will be in effect until March 5th, 2024, unless an extension is announced. QATAR: UPDATE ON THE PAYMENT OF PATENT ANNUITIES DOHA – The Intellectual Property Rights Protection Department of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has retracted its decision issued in Circular number 2/2024 regarding the new regulations concerning the payment of the patent annuities announced a few months ago. 🌐 Recent Developments in South African IP Law 🌐 On 22 October 2024, the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry, and Competition convened to discuss pivotal shifts in South Africa's intellectual property framework. Key points include: 1️⃣ Intellectual Property Laws Amendment Act (IPLAA): Designed to safeguard Indigenous Knowledge, the IPLAA has been stalled for years due to conflicts with other legislation. Ongoing internal debates continue on its fate. 2️⃣ Substantive Patent Examination and Utility Model Patents: The government is transitioning to an in-depth patent examination system, replacing the current depository method. A new Patents Bill was introduced in October 2024, proposing utility model patents and revisions to the Designs Act to align with global norms. 3️⃣ Anticipation of Madrid Protocol Accession: While South Africa is not yet a signatory, steps are being taken to amend the Trade Marks Act by February 2025, facilitating easier international trademark registration. These efforts reflect South Africa's dedication to updating its IP laws and encouraging innovation.
