Founder and Editor of EU Scream

Tech is all pervasive yet effectively unaccountable. So what can be done? That's what I discussed with Marietje Schaake on Wednesday at an event convened by The International Center for Future Generations - ICFG and EU Scream at a packed room at Sofitel Brussels. Marietje's new book, The Tech Coup, is an invaluable and highly readable primer on what's gone wrong with tech and how to create a safer future. One key takeaway is that we can do a better job of resisting tech lobby narratives that have become commonplace including in Brussels, where Marietje was a Dutch member of the European Parliament for most of the past decade before joining Stanford University’s Cyber Policy Center and the United Nations High Level Advisory Body on AI. So the next time you hear someone gravely intone about how "regulation stifles innovation" bear in mind Marietje's handy retort: "We cannot allow disruptive technologies to innovate away democracy."

Here's an interesting read on how unchecked AI (and automation) could undermine democracy and more broadly society as we know it today: https://benmgarfinkel.blog/2021/02/26/is-democracy-a-fad/
