Swire Coca Cola + ASU = sustainability commitment 👏👏 “Swire Coca-Cola Arizona is the course’s largest partner to date, with a 120,000-person workforce.” “One of the challenges students face when they enter the workforce is how their coursework transitions to real-world application,” said April Furin, sustainability manager at Swire Coca-Cola. “An enterprise-based sustainability course bridges that gap, equipping students with the tools to identify sustainability opportunities, address challenges and drive meaningful change. Those skills are valuable and will not only help sustainability students find employment after graduation but will help companies, like Swire Coca-Cola, continue their ongoing commitment to sustainability.” https://lnkd.in/gibVtWhY

It's the season of student arrivals, welcome events and course inductions - in the UK there are now c.2 million undergraduates studying each year. How will they be educated in sustainability and how are they shaping that learning? 🎓 There is some amazing practice out there - in stand-out courses designed with sustainability in mind - but still too often this practice is in the margins, not the core, or in obvious 'greener' subjects, but not touching all courses. So I'd like to share a huge thank you to The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education who are now hosting the online 'anti-greenwash education' toolkit as a legacy resource for the sector 💚 You may have spotted this before - its framework uses meaningful scaffolds to measure how sustainability is designed into courses. Developed with students and used by academics, it enables a full portfolio view of where sustainability learning is embedded. There are student-created videos and tips, to help students to use these scaffolds to influence their universities to go wider, faster and deeper on this. Equally interesting is the sector review from the student viewpoint. It looked at how universities talk about these commitments and what that sounds like to students who don't know the educational jargon around it. Their take on it is worth a read, for strategists, marketing teams and sustainability experts: 'What I discovered is how much ambiguity there is... how confusing it is as a student to come into that world without prior knowledge... I think curriculum greenwash is going to become more and more prevalent unless we put a stop to it" Students often cut to the chase and see this more clearly than we do - could you use that clarity to power up your sustainability learning this year? 💡 Thank you Kerr Castle Ailsa Crum Amy S. for empowering students to influence in this agenda and in so many aspects of higher education practice! A green career path is increasingly becoming a priority for today's environmentally conscious generation. Recognizing this shift, educational institutions are adapting by offering specialized courses aimed at nurturing talent for sustainability roles. For individuals aspiring to make a mark in the green sector, understanding the landscape of available educational programs is essential. Courses designed to equip students with green skills are not only paving the way for a new wave of professionals but are also responding to the industry's demand for expertise in sustainability. At the T. A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), Associate Professor Muneza Kagzi highlights the institution's commitment to green education through its Integrated Program in Management (IPM) and MBA programs. These programs incorporate essential courses like “Sustainability Responsibility and Managerial Ethics (SRME)” and the project-based course “SEVA,” focusing on practical sustainability learning. TAPMI also encourages students to engage in social internships and Coursera courses to deepen their understanding of sustainability in business. Similarly, the Centurion University of Technology and Management (CUTM) embraces a skill-based educational philosophy. Director of Admissions and Marketing, Sukanta Parida, shares that their BTech courses offer specializations in electric vehicle manufacturing and renewable energy, in collaboration with General Electronics. CUTM also introduces students to innovative recycling through a “waste to wealth” course, emphasizing the practical application of green skills. The impact of these green-focused courses extends beyond the classroom. TAPMI alumni, particularly those from human resources who pursued sustainability courses, have successfully integrated CSR principles into their roles, enhancing corporate reputations and contributing to long-term success. CUTM’s initiative in e-rickshaw manufacturing serves as a practical learning platform, showcasing the real-world application of green education. However, integrating sustainability into education is not without its challenges. Creating engaging curricula that weave sustainability across various disciplines requires innovative teaching methods and real-life examples to capture students' interest. Both TAPMI and CUTM emphasize the need for awareness and the importance of building a strong foundational understanding of sustainable living. As we navigate towards a greener future, the role of education in shaping the next generation of sustainability leaders cannot be understated. For those considering a career in sustainability, selecting the right course is the first step toward making a meaningful impact. Let’s foster a culture of sustainability that transcends industries and generations. Join the conversation and share your thoughts on green education and careers. #GreenCareers #SustainabilityEducation #FutureLeaders #EcoFriendlyInnovation

What have I missed on new research outputs in sustainability education and learning? I'm thinking particularly about practice-based and outcomes-focused research, rather than theoretical or conceptual material. And bigger scale, comparative and collaborative work, not single classroom/course case studies. I'm doing training and strategy work this year using implementation insights from research, also thinking ahead to a policy input meeting on Friday. An AdvanceHE literature review in 2023 made a killer point. There's a critical gap between practice and research where it comes to sustainability education - certainly in relation to higher education settings, where my background is. Innovation on the ground to build sustainability into education systems, is not always making it to publication. Those publishing on the topic are not always the people at the coalface of the change work. So we have blind spots... I'm wondering what else is out there that's worth a look - especially if it has crossed that practice-research bridge... Also - did anyone else prepare an Impact Case Study for the last Research Excellence Framework, with focus on sustainability education and learning? My cat Angel would love to read any of your suggestions. She likes to keep her knowledge up to date 😹

Title: Empowering Tomorrow's Leaders: The Importance of Sustainability Education In a world facing unprecedented environmental challenges, the role of education in shaping sustainable mindsets and behaviors has never been more critical. Sustainability education stands as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path towards a greener, more resilient future. By instilling in students the knowledge, values, and skills needed to address pressing environmental issues, this approach to education empowers individuals to become stewards of the planet. Understanding Sustainability Education Sustainability education transcends traditional classroom boundaries, encompassing a holistic approach to learning that integrates environmental, social, and economic dimensions. It goes beyond simply teaching about environmental conservation; it cultivates a deep understanding of interconnected systems and fosters a sense of responsibility towards the planet and its inhabitants. At its core, sustainability education equips students with the tools to critically analyze complex environmental challenges and develop innovative solutions. From understanding the principles of renewable energy to exploring sustainable agriculture practices, students engage in hands-on learning experiences that inspire them to become agents of change in their communities. Cultivating Sustainable Mindsets Central to sustainability education is the cultivation of sustainable mindsets - ways of thinking that prioritize long-term environmental health and social equity. By encouraging students to question consumerist lifestyles and challenge unsustainable practices, educators nurture a generation of conscious consumers and responsible citizens. Sustainability education not only empowers individuals but also fosters the development of resilient communities capable of adapting to environmental changes. By promoting collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking, this educational approach enables communities to harness local resources and implement sustainable development strategies. Embracing the Future As we stand at the crossroads of environmental crisis and opportunity, the need for sustainability education has never been more urgent. By equipping students with the knowledge and skills to address complex environmental challenges, we empower them to become leaders in building a more sustainable world. As educators, policymakers, and concerned citizens, we must embrace sustainability education as a transformative force for positive change. Let us commit to nurturing a generation of environmental stewards who will not only safeguard the planet for future generations but also inspire others to join them on this journey towards sustainability. #talentserve #SustainabilityEducation #EnvironmentalStewardship #EmpoweringFutureLeaders #GreenEducation #SustainableCommunities #ClimateAction #EducationForChange Join the movement towards a greener, more sustainable future. Together, we can make a difference.
