This year will see COPs for both climate and biodiversity take place, on different sides of the globe: nature COP16 in Colombia and climate COP29 in Azerbaijan. Both will see global leaders and delegates from around the world gather together to take stock of the progress (or lack thereof) made on tackling the climate and nature crises, and to make pledges for the immediate future. However, progress on both reversing the decline of biological diversity and limiting global temperature rise have been slower than we need it to be. The agreements made at previous COPs are meaningless without being enforced and enacted. This is why we need to see these frameworks translated into binding national laws to ensure that countries’ international commitments are fulfilled. This year, ClientEarth will be sending a small delegation to both COP16 and COP29, to keep an eye on the negotiations and report back on progress made. Find out about our COP presence here 👇

🌍 What are COPs? 🌍 The Conference of the Parties (COP) is a global event where world leaders, environmental experts, and activists come together to discuss and negotiate actions to combat climate change. Each year, the COP focuses on assessing #progress in the fight against climate change and setting new targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable development. 🔜 Upcoming COP 29 🔜 Mark your calendars! The next COP, #COP29, will be held in Azerbaijan from November 11-22, 2024. This conference will be another pivotal moment for the global community to push forward on urgent climate actions and implement the goals of the Paris Agreement. 🌱✨ Pan African Climate Justice Alliance PACJA Climate Policy Initiative Climate Collective UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre COP29 Azerbaijan Justine M Nyaga Nicholas Ngece Murithi Antony Climate First Nairobi summer school on climate justice Summer school #COP29 #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Azerbaijan #ClimateChange

My take on COP29? As the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference convenes at Baku and climate-related goals are established, it is essential that nations are held accountable through consistent, objective evaluation metrics. I call on COP29 participants to commit to shared standards for tracking and publicly reporting progress, including carbon reduction, biodiversity preservation, and social impact metrics. Countries should not only ask for more money but must also be accountable to their people for using national resources to combat climate-based challenges. Transparency and accountability must be held at all levels. #cop29 #climatechange #fife #development #transparency #friedensau #research #UN

🌿💭 Reflecting on the first week of COP16, addressing the issue of financing is crucial for restoring countries' biodiversity. In previous years, it has been observed that more developed countries have hindered the progress of climate negotiations due to their reluctance to allocate a larger share of funds compared to less developed countries. COP16 has called for an end to this deadlock and for financial action to be taken. As we move into the second week of COP16, there is optimism that more substantive financial discussions will occur. The week kicks off with 'Finance and Biodiversity Day', where it is hoped that these negotiations will be actively pursued. If you wish to discuss any of the COP16 themes or content, please contact one of our experts: Matthew Germain, Caroline Bush, Julian Wolfgramm-King, Arthur Hopkinson, or Lauren Gardner 🌱 Find out more here > https://lnkd.in/eaCkDk2B #OCBiodiversityBrief #COP16 #GlobalBiodiversity #BiodiversityFramework

🤝 Humbled to be invited by COP29 Azerbaijan President-designate Mukhtar Babayev to co-facilitate informal Ministerial consultations on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement alongside Simon Watts, New Zealand’s Minister of Climate Change & Revenue 🇳🇿 The first ‘Global Stocktake’ at COP28 highlighted the urgent need to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C and achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. A well-regulated Article 6 will be a key instrument to foster global climate cooperation through high-integrity carbon markets, channel investments to developing countries, and raise climate ambition. As COP29 approaches, there is still much work ahead. In the coming weeks, we will engage with Parties to gather their views, and work towards possible landing zones on outstanding issues on Article 6 in support of incoming COP29 Presidency’s efforts to deliver a successful outcome at COP29. 🌍 What to Expect at COP29 and the Road to COP30 🌍 This November, Azerbaijan takes on the Presidency of COP29, hosted at Baku Stadium, marking a milestone in climate leadership. With a strong focus on climate finance, trillions of dollars are required to accelerate the global transition to low-carbon economies. COP29 will be a pivotal platform for countries to present their updated national climate action plans under the Paris Agreement, due by early 2025. Looking ahead, COP30 in Brazil will be the first UNFCCC COP hosted in the Amazon—a critical biome in the fight against climate change. Brazil's hosting of COP30 in 2025 underscores the urgent need for global collaboration in preserving biodiversity and advancing sustainable development.
