Sydney, Western Sydney and the rest of NSW now has a plan when it comes to our visitor economy. Sydney was just voted the #1 tourism city in the world, we're all working together to make tourism in NSW a $91 billion industry. NSW is already Australia's biggest tourism market - with more than $53 billion spent over the last year, employing almost 300,000 workers - but we want to make it even bigger and better. When it comes to the visitor economy, Sydney still cannot escape the “tyranny of distance” despite high-speed travel and direct international flights. For many international travellers, we are still a long way from anywhere, and that means having to try harder to woo visitors to our shores. It’s not good enough to expect the city’s icons – the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Bondi Beach – to keep them coming, and coming back. “Been there, done that” is the last thing we want to hear from potential visitors who could find our city so attractive that it requires multiple visits to enjoy it all. This is why the focus of our tourism leaders has shifted to an experience-based offering that takes visitors beneath the surface of the iconic images. Speaking at the Hertford Civic Society event today, BTA Chairman Nick de Bois CBE highlighted the importance of tourism to the local economy. The Visitor Economy in Hertfordshire is growing. In 2022 it welcomed 25 million visitors and was worth over £.2.2 billion (40% up on 2021); it also provided nearly 39k tourism related jobs to the local region, 6% of total employment in Hertfordshire. We are working with the #LocalVisitorEconomyPartnership, Visit Herts, to help the region become more sustainable and resilient, through a simplified regional structure for English tourism, as well as business support, training and championing of domestic tourism. LVEPs will also play a greater role in national and local policy, strategy and decision-making, and when bidding for funding. As well as transforming the tourism landscape of England, we are also developing a new regenerative tourism strategy to ensure tourism is developed in a way that supports local communities and the environment. Nick also highlighted VisitBritain’s upcoming campaign #StarringGREATBritain that will use film and TV experiences as the hook to inspire visits now to drive spend across all of the UK. VisitBritain’s research shows that 7 in 10 UK visitors have visited a film or TV location in the UK. The campaign, launching in January, is harnessing this trend, putting our destinations as the STAR of show and showcasing our regional diversity to drive visitor spend across the country now. The points raised by Lucy George, of the Welbeck Hotel & Apartments, highlight an important issue for the Isle of Man’s tourism industry. While the introduction of a Travelodge in Villiers Square could attract more visitors, there’s a real risk that smaller, family-run businesses, which contribute so much to the island's unique character, could be left without adequate support. Visit Isle of Man has recognised that connectivity costs and availability are key barriers to growing the visitor economy. Their support for changes at the Steam Packet Company is encouraging, but it’s vital that these improvements go beyond words and deliver real benefits for local businesses. It’s important to strike a balance between encouraging new developments and protecting the interests of established hotels. A more collaborative approach between government, large operators, and small, independent businesses could ensure the entire sector thrives, without losing the charm and individuality that makes the Isle of Man so special. https://lnkd.in/eVN_h3cX

Here's a fresh perspective: 🚀 Tourism Improvement Districts (TIDs) are revolutionizing how regions promote themselves. Our TID is the first in the Commonwealth and funds marketing efforts through a small 2% fee paid by hotel guests. 💡 Key Benefits: -Year-Round Advertising: Richmond Region Tourism launched 14 new marketing campaigns last year thanks to TID resources. -Incentives for Events: 56 incentives approved last year resulted in around 140,000 room nights, bringing vital business to our area. -Support for Local Businesses: Tourists aren’t just filling hotel rooms; they're dining at local restaurants, shopping, and visiting museums. 🌍 The pandemic highlighted just how crucial tourism is.
