Aram is a Professor at American University’s School of Communication and Jesse is the founder of Dark Matter Media. Both are known for groundbreaking work unraveling the intricate dynamics of #data ecosystems. https://bit.ly/3UWa5AJ#DX#DigitalTransformation#KevinCraine#podcast
As data use becomes more pervasive, we find ourselves divided into two opposing viewpoints:
The Surveillance Economy: One perspective views the overuse of data as a slippery slope toward a surveillance state, with increased control and regulation threatening personal freedoms.
More Data, More Evidence: On the flip side, there are those who argue that the more data we have, the better equipped we are to make informed decisions, counter extremist views, and provide scientific evidence.
This divide creates a complex discourse around the ethics of data use, privacy, and governance. Where do you stand?

Things I learned while recording this podcast:
* 73% of US voters have confidence that our elections are run fairly, according to a poll. But what about the other 27%, and what do they think is going wrong? (thanks Nicholas Judd, PhD)
* Canada has one federal level commission that validates election fairness, and where necessary will hand-count the ballots with stakeholders in the room. Contrast this to our mosaic in the U.S. of each state doing it for themselves. It incents us to understand the local differences and culture of each state's electoral processes, but consistency is out the window. (thanks Tanya Janca).
* In the U.S. the downballot elections matter: For each state, the Secretary of State - and in some cases, Attorney General, and in one the Lt. Governor - determine who runs the election. And the state legislatures determine the intricate rules around voting processes, districts, recounts, etc.
* Some of our political influencers impacted elections across our northern border! Tanya Janca had a great anecdote about how their perceptions on certain issues motivated the trucking lobby in Canada to take action.
* What if we need to verify? 98% of the U.S. federal election this Tuesday will involve a paper ballot, thanks to the work of Verified Voting Foundation over the last two decades. The perception of the impenetrable black box voting machine looms less large in reality than our minds and airwaves.

As a parent and professional, I devour consumer insights that reveal the behaviors, interests and influence of up-and-coming generations. WE released “Alpha Intelligence,” our new survey findings about the next critical consumer cohort. We surveyed both Generation Alpha kids (ages 10-14) and their parents to understand the influence of Gen Alpha and what influences them, including the role of technology and AI in shaping their daily lives. In his book, Data Independence: Reclaiming Privacy in an Era of Evolving Tech, scientist Wes Chaar, Ph.D. provides a candid view of the state of our privacy and what he has observed from the earliest days of predictive consumer modeling. From the lens of the data analyst, scientist, AI advisor, the author shares a vision of privacy in crisis and thoughts on mitigating risks to human freedom.
Today, companies and organizations not only want to know what you think, they want to know how you feel and use that sentiment to manipulate your behavior.
“To ensure that privacy remains a cornerstone of individual freedom, it is imperative that data control is given to the rightful owners of the data: the individual.”

Did you know it's Privacy Awareness Week (PAW)? 🕵️
Each year, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) holds PAW to highlight the importance of personal information protection and the challenges of today's privacy landscape. This year, the theme is "Power Up Your Privacy," and PAW runs from 6-12 May.
The constant evolution of technology, including AI, data analytics, social media, and our reliance on devices demands a proactive approach to privacy – we should all be more aware of how our information is used and protected. That's why looking after your own, your practice's and your clients' privacy practices is crucial.
