Last Friday, I closed a significant chapter at Copenhagen Business School by defending my master thesis on an intriguing subject: leadership self-sacrifice. My research examined the prominent case of Jacinda Ardern’s resignation in 2023 through the philosophical lens of Georges Bataille. By exploring the concepts of the ‘sacred’ and ‘sacrifice’, I aimed to reinterpret the popular discourse and imageries surrounding Ardern’s decision to step down. A tip of the hat to my supervisor, Sverre Spoelstra, and censor, Billy Adamsen, whose intellectual gymnastics pushed the bounds of our discussion into the fertile fields of emotional burnout in leadership identity work and the often excessively positive and quasi-religious tone of mainstream leadership discourse. Our conversations didn’t just circle around my thesis but danced through the annals of 20th-century philosophy, giving nods to thinkers like Bergson, Barthes, and Derrida. This defense not only ticked the box for my ‘MSc in Business Administration and Philosophy’ but also set the stage for my next journey: a PhD Fellowship at CBS Department of Business Humanities and Law, starting this September. In this new chapter, I aim to delve deeper into the philosophical insights I’ve garnered during my master’s program, specifically within the exciting research environment of Rethinking Entrepreneurship. I am profoundly grateful to all my friends, family, and mentors who have supported me throughout this academic journey. Your guidance and encouragement have been indispensable. #Philosophy #Leadership #Graduation #Academia
