Since June 2024, Conciliation Resources has been working with state and civil society partners in the Central African Republic (CAR) to implement a project aiming to integrate mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) into gender-sensitive peacebuilding programming. This month, experts and practitioners in MHPSS, #peacebuilding & gender gathered in CAR to develop a toolkit for training practitioners on how to integrate an MHPSS-sensitive approach to community engagement. The toolkit will support the work of practitioners in CAR to help people access mental health services and support referral systems. It aims to increase collaboration between different actors on MHPSS, and recognises the role of religious leaders and traditional healers in encouraging people to seek help. 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲'𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 - 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐔𝐩 TeamUp is a #psychosocial support intervention of structured play, movement, and body awareness activities for children aged 6 to 18 affected by conflict, developed by a coalition of War Child Nederland, Save the Children Nederland, and UNICEF Nederland. Trained facilitators use non-verbal, movement-based approaches to ensure the #participation of all children, regardless of language barriers. Recent research on Gender-Based Violence indicates that while progress has been made in addressing Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) needs for GBV survivors, significant gaps remain, particularly for younger girls and their caregivers in humanitarian and low-resource settings. It was therefore recommended that: 1. There is urgent need to strengthen intersectoral collaboration to address the psychosocial and protection needs of GBV survivors. 2. Expand MHPSS programming to include younger survivors and their caregivers. 3. Increase funding and research to fill gaps in understanding effective responses for different age groups. #Together we can end GBV#

🌍 Advocating for Mental Health Support for immigrant Youth🌍 Today, I want to shed light on a critical issue that often goes unnoticed: the lack of mental health support for youth in many underprivileged countries. In these regions, abuse and trauma are frequently acknowledged but rarely addressed, leaving countless young people to navigate their pain alone. This is not just a foreign issue. As these youth immigrate, they bring their unaddressed trauma with them, impacting their well-being and integration into new communities. It is imperative that we recognize the profound effects of this trauma and take steps to support these individuals. Why Cultural Competency Matters: Healthcare providers in receiving countries must be equipped with cultural competency to effectively support these populations. Understanding the cultural context of their experiences is crucial for providing compassionate and effective care. Here’s why: 1. Empathy and Understanding: Culturally competent care fosters empathy and understanding, allowing providers to connect with patients on a deeper level. 2. Tailored Interventions: It enables the development of tailored interventions that respect cultural backgrounds and address specific needs. 3. Building Trust: Trust is essential in healthcare. When providers demonstrate cultural awareness, it helps build trust and encourages individuals to seek help. We must advocate for comprehensive mental health support systems both in African countries and in the communities that receive these youth. By doing so, we can help them heal, thrive, and contribute positively to society.
