#ArcherWright crews attending this morning's Safety Stand Down in Henderson County, NC. These crews, who work on our joint venture NCDOT I-26 Expansion Project, are learning about the hazards of pinchpoints and staying out of the "line of fire." A simple definition of “line of fire” is being in harm’s way. Line of fire injuries occur when the path of a moving object or the release of hazardous substances intersects with an individual’s body. • To avoid Line of Fire incidents: • Always be aware of any body part that can be exposed to a line of fire/pinchpoint(eyes, hands, fingers, feet). • Never pull tools or equipment toward your body or face. • A Task Hazard Analysis should always be performed to identify all hazards prior to beginning any work. • Barricade the area around a hoisting zone. • If someone is working around equipment, make sure the operator knows where they are at all times. • Never attempt to operate equipment that has been tagged or locked. It's essential to emphasize the significant threat posed by struck-by hazards in construction. Whether it's workers being struck by falling objects from heights, vehicular accidents on-site, or mishandling of heavy equipment. By forging a culture of vigilance and adherence to safe work procedures and practices, including the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE), continuous equipment inspection and maintenance, and effective traffic control plans, we can significantly reduce the occurrence of these incidents. A great initiative! In Australia in 2022 "struck by" related fatalities was around 24% and whilst working in the vicinity of powered mobile plant is a high risk construction activity, more work could be done in raising awareness across all industry sectors. At Monitor Workplace Safety, we have designed a Duty of Care Short Course that is customised to individual workplaces and their Traffic Management Plans. This program is different from the RIIRTM203E Program (Work as a Safety Observer/Spotter) as it is directed more at risks associated with working around mobile plant, blind spots, use of hand signals and radio communication when directing reversing vehicles. It was conducted over a number of Pilot Programs in conjunction with industry @Monitor Workplace Safety and WorkSafe ACT

In March 2014, a devastating event unfolded in Boston's Back Bay, where a spark from welding activities ignited a blaze that tragically claimed the lives of two firefighters. This incident spotlighted the critical need for stringent hot work safety regulations in construction. As professionals dedicated to building and fire safety, it's our responsibility to ensure regulations are followed to prevent such tragedies and foster a safer community. Hot Work Hazards in Construction: Hot work—encompassing welding, cutting, brazing, and soldering—is a vital component of construction that carries inherent risks. The generation of sparks and hot materials can easily ignite combustible substances, leading to fires with catastrophic consequences. The Boston incident serves as a sobering reminder of these dangers and the importance of adhering to safety protocols. Implementing comprehensive hot work programs, including permits, training, and fire watch measures, is not just a regulatory compliance issue but a fundamental aspect of risk reduction and community safety. In response to the Boston fire, legislation has been introduced to mandate better oversight, training, and accountability in hot work operations. This legislation represents a continued effort in safeguarding our workers and communities from the risks associated with construction fires. It highlights the essential role of ongoing advocacy, rigorous safety measures, and community engagement in enhancing fire safety standards. As we reflect on the lessons learned from past incidents, let's renew our commitment to fire safety and risk reduction in construction. By prioritizing hot work safety, we not only comply with regulations but also protect lives and property. Together, we can create a safer environment for everyone involved in construction activities.
