As an innovative M-TES, a mobile heat battery (M-HB) is built on the reversible hydration of potassium carbonate (K2CO3) composites and encased in standard intermodal containers as depicted in Figure below. The M-HB provides a storage capacity of around 10 GJ and a discharging power up to 100 kW. It has an electricity-driven mechanical system that ensures efficient and continuous thermal power for charging and discharging. Spent some time in Arizona this week including at the AZ Water Association annual conference and driving around visiting different power plants in the area with zero-liquid discharge setups for their water utilization. ROTEC - Reverse Osmosis Technologies has a project coming at a ZLD powerplant so stay tuned for more exciting updates on that. A few things I learned this week: Arizona is experiencing incredible growth, both from population and industry. Industry, which includes multiple massive semiconductor facilities spurred by the CHIPS Act and the business-friendly incentives in the state, is asserting dominance over available water supplies and other resources in limited supply such as talent. With population growth, municipalities are seeing higher and higher water demand. This water will get increasingly more saline as wells are drawn down and new resources are tapped to keep up with demand. The PFAS issue will also rear it's ugly head here as critical new and existing water sources have to come into compliance with the EPA. There is fortunately a ton of infrastructure in place already to send wastewater to industry for use in power plants and factories for cooling towers and other applications. But the more saline it becomes, the more treatment such as reverse osmosis becomes required at one point or another in the process. It was cool to meet Karthik Kumarasamy, PhD, PE for instance who has the unenviable task of writing the rules and guidelines for direct potable reuse in the state of Arizona. DPR is one of the ways you can protect your water sources - by treating your wastewater to drinking water standards. All in all, a very exciting time in the evolution of the sector for arid areas like Arizona that have a ton of growth and prosperity that needs to be achieved sustainably. There is no other choice. Thanks to Jeanne Jensen, P.E. and the rest of the team for organizing and getting me down there.
