This is very exciting indeed, what we will need however to ensure sustained impact that reaches universal access for #sanitation services is sanitation planning that includes the full spectrum of specific activities, timelines, assigned budgets, and accountabilities that are required to implement a market-led area wide inclusive sanitation approach, i.e., strong implementation arrangements. The areawide plans needs to consider all the segments of the population and the different approaches and interventions that will be required for them to all get access. These will include stimulating markets, strengthening governance and regulations, increasing financing, and planning for subsidies to reach the poor. Planning should be done through a collective impact platform that brings together the various actors that are currently siloed.

Today is the United Nations World Toilet Day, which is a valuable reminder that although sanitation is a human right, 3.5 billion people are living without access to safe toilets. The theme this year is Sanitation for Peace - a toilet should be a secure, hygienic and private place that is part of a safely managed sanitation system. Since 1992, ECOPSIS has been delivering projects globally to help governments and private actors with safely managed sanitation. Some of our highlights this year have been: 🛣 The National Costed Roadmap towards safely managed sanitation in rural areas in Mozambique: this Roadmap is a strategic tool for setting targets, implementing activities and estimating the budget required for achieving these sector targets, with funding from UNICEF and DNAAS - Direcção Nacional de Abastecimento de Água e Saneamento, in partnership with PROWATER Consultores Lda and Claudette Lavallee 👷♀️ Mapping, modelling and assessment of wastewater and stormwater management systems in Greater Tirana, Albania: this technical assistance will enable the public utility UKT - Ujësjellës Kanalizime Tiranë to improve assets management and plan investments, with funding from SECO Economic Cooperation and Development in partnership with E.B.S Shpk 📜 Sanitation master plans for five secondary cities using the CWIS approach in Mauritania: these master plans include infrastructure development plans, focusing on non-sewered services, as well as institutional and funding modalities that take into account emerging climate risks affecting the country, with funding from MHA (Ministere de l'hydraulique de l'assainissement), African Development Bank Group and in partnership with FICHTNER Water & Transportation GmbH We’d love to hear from our network about what you've been doing to accelerate action towards achieving 'safe toilets for all by 2030'! #WorldToiletDay #SDG6 #SanitationForPeace

📣 Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé Champions Enhanced Financing for Water and Sanitation 📣 On August 2, 2024, at the 6th session of the EAA Council of Ministers in Yamoussoukro, Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé called for innovative financing mechanisms to address Africa's pressing water and sanitation challenges. He emphasized the need for financing under more favorable conditions, including concessionary interest rates and extended loan terms, to support long-term sanitation projects. In his speech, Mambé highlighted that sanitation projects should be financed over a period of 20 to 40 years, urging experts to leverage their technical expertise to advocate for these solutions. Minister Bouaké Fofana also underscored Côte d'Ivoire’s dedication to the EAA's mission and encouraged member states to engage their governments in supporting this crucial vision. The EAA continues to play a pivotal role in uniting African nations, advancing innovative solutions, and ensuring equitable access to water and sanitation services. DEVELOPMENT FINANCE: New initiative to leverage $7bn for urban sanitation in Africa The African Water Facility (AWF) has launched a new financing window for urban sanitation in Africa that hopes to address the persistent lack of access to sanitation in Africa’s fast-growing cities. The Africa Urban Sanitation Investment Initiative hopes to demonstrate new business models for urban sanitation in Africa and inspire funders. Over the next 10 years, the Africa Urban Sanitation Investment Initiative (AUSII) aims to spend €320 million across 50 projects and provide 15 million people with safely-managed sanitation services. Dr Debjyoty Mukherjee, principal public-private partnership expert at AWF, indicated at Stockholm Water Week that the initiative would use the next 18 months to focus on mobilising €30 million of initial capital and build up a pipeline of projects. “Africa has the lowest sanitation rates in the world, [but] AUSII can turn this around,” Beth Dunford, vice president for agriculture, human and social development at the African Development Bank Group, commented at the event. “It will be accelerator and innovator to African sanitation.” Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/eCBpdtfC #DevelopmentFinance #Sanitation #Wastewater

On 22 June 2024, Rand Water embarks on a 37-day maintenance regime that will see days-long water disruptions hitting parts of Gauteng on a set schedule. The taste of water shedding in Tshwane is already plaguing the residents due to the dire need for extensive proactive maintenance of South Africa's water infrastructure. This can only be achieved with the government and the private sector working together.   "Mergence Investment Managers (MIM) is the only asset manager with a stake in the two privately owned water concessions in South Africa, Siza Water in KwaZulu Natal and Silulumanzi in Limpopo, by means of a Public Private Partnership we have with SA Water Works (SAWW). Siza Water celebrated its 25th anniversary in March 2024 and the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation David Mahlobo lauded the project which has recently received Green Drop certification and supplies free water daily to 450,000 customers, 300,000 of whom are served classified as indigent communities. It is no secret that “water-shedding” in parts of South Africa is looking increasingly likely. We commend the government on establishing the Water Partnership Office in the Development Bank of SA to bring together the Department of Water and Sanitation, National Treasury, other departments, and financiers to work together with municipalities on long-term solutions. A better understanding of water access can lead to better evidence and transparency in decision-making in the water sector. With a DKK 3.4 million grant from the Grundfos Foundation | PDJF, Economist Impact and GRUNDFOS have set out to make access to water a more measurable and visible part of the global development agenda through a new Water Access Impact Tool - a first-in-class, evidence-based quantitative tool to understand the value of water access.
