Excited to be a panelist at Yorkshire Sustainability Festival this afternoon because over 4M tonnes of edible food goes to waste in the UK each year while 11M people face food insecurity. Through its manifesto 'Where’s the Food? Strengthening Communities Through Surplus Food Redistribution’ FareShare UK is calling on the next government to make it easier for businesses to donate surplus food through: • Subsidies for farmers to cover redistribution costs • Tax benefits for businesses donating surplus food • Mandatory food waste reporting • Clear guidelines for ‘good samaritans’ on food donation safety • Sustained funding for farm level food redistribution • A UK-wide plan to end emergency food aid • Resources for local food waste and food security projects Every £1 FareShare spends on redistributing yields almost £6 in social value, saving millions for services like the NHS and fostering resilient, sustainable communities.

While the UK discards over 9.5 million tonnes of food each year, the festive season offers an opportunity to rethink our habits and reduce waste. Popular items like turkey, Christmas pudding, and mince pies often end up in landfills, contributing to harmful methane emissions. Our latest blog highlights the environmental impact of food waste during Christmas and provides practical strategies for businesses to make a difference. From improving food handling practices to redistributing surplus food to charities, there are effective ways to tackle the issue. 🚨 Big news for food waste and sustainability in the UK! 🚨 The government has just announced a £15 million fund to tackle food waste at the farm level, ensuring it gets to people's plates through the not-for-profit food redistribution sector in England. This milestone is a result of years of campaigning from FareShare UK and The Felix Project and a great step in the direction of a more circular economy 🎉 Charlotte Hill OBE of The Felix Project, and Kris Gibbon-Walsh of FareShare, shared a joint statement saying: “After years of campaigning by food redistribution charities, we are thrilled to see this fund come to fruition. We are pleased that the government has recognised that too much food goes to waste on our farms, and that it should be redistributed to feed people who need it.” Did you know that over 330,000 tonnes of perfectly good food never makes it off UK farms each year? This significant commitment will empower charities like ours to strengthen partnerships with farmers, ensuring that surplus produce reaches those in need rather than going to waste. In 2021, I moved from New Zealand to the United Kingdom. One thing I left behind was New Zealand Food Waste Champions 12.3 Charitable Trust (NZFWC 12.3 Trust), committed to an Aotearoa New Zealand where food is valued, not wasted. When we interviewed Kaitlin Dawson for the Executive Director role, we knew she was the right person for the job. Since 2021, NZ Food Waste Champions has connected the sector, advocated for change, and activated industry on food waste reduction. We need people to champion environmental & social causes, and provide accessible advice for people, business and government. Well done to those who trusted this project, and who have stuck with it since, in particular: Miranda Mirosa, Deborah Manning, ANDREW FISHER, Sam Oakden, @Alisa Robertson, Angela Clifford, Lisa Busch, Kaitlin Dawson ... and the many other Champions and staff members, past and present. 🙏 To find out more: Reduce food waste at home? https://lnkd.in/eHww3Enk Latest Impact Report? https://lnkd.in/eha4WBKu

Tackling food waste requires us to consume differently, and that can be tough. After all, we're creatures of habit. Which is why we need more creative thinking and applications to help people eat food rather than bin it. Creative environmental campaigns charity Hubbub, supported by Starbucks, has launched the second round of the Eat It Up Fund. So if you or someone you know is working in this space or has a great idea, apply below. #foodwaste #sustainability #environment
