#AMCDiscoveries Fracture healing is a complex process. Uncertainty exists over the influence of osteoporosis and the medications used to treat it on fracture healing. Prof Manju Chandran from Singapore General Hospital and Duke-NUS Medical School along with her colleagues from the Fracture Working Group of the Council of Scientific Advisors of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) conducted an exhaustive review of the published literature to explore the impact of anti-osteoporosis medications on fracture healing in humans. They concluded that there appears to be no deleterious effect of osteoporosis medications on fracture healing overall. The benefit of treating osteoporosis and the urgent necessity to mitigate imminent refracture risk after a fracture should be given prime consideration. Early diagnosis and active monitoring are crucial for chronic kidney disease treatment. To accurately identify individuals at high risk of advanced renal fibrosis, researchers from the Department of Health Technology and Informatics (HTI) of #PolyU have developed “Smart-CKD”, a non-invasive computer-aided diagnostic tool. It integrates ultrasound data and selected clinical variables to provide clinical insights and assesses the risk of moderate-to-severe renal fibrosis progression in chronic kidney disease patients with a promising diagnostic efficiency of 80%. Led by Prof. Michael Tin Cheung YING, Associate Head, and Dr Ziman CHEN, Postdoctoral Fellow of HTI, the team plans to conduct further prospective clinical research on Smart-CKD, utilising PolyU’s innovative medical technology and facilities in collaboration with medical institutions in the Greater Bay Area and Hong Kong partners. Together, we will collaborate on research to enhance the impact of S-CKD on clinical management, ultimately improving CKD patients’ prognosis.
