In the heart of Lebanon, a new partnership is blooming—one that aims to empower local communities and drive sustainable growth. We are excited to lead the way with Rural Entrepreneurs for the “Strengthening Agriculture, Local Communities, and Small and Medium Enterprises (ACE)” project.
This initiative focuses on supporting #MSMEs across six vital value chains: Olive 🫒, Dairy 🧀🥛🧈, Honey 🍯, Legumes 🫘🫛, Wheat and Barley 🌾, Agroforestry 👨🌾, and Protected Agriculture. These are more than just products; they are the lifeblood of rural communities in the West Bekaa and Hasbaya Districts, where tradition meets innovation and where every farmer, beekeeper, and producer plays a crucial role.
Through this collaboration, we aim to deepen our engagement with these communities, fostering growth from the ground up. By connecting local entrepreneurs, farmers, and artisans with new opportunities, we are paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future.
This outreach campaign is implemented by GIZ Lebanon in partnership with Rural Entrepreneurs and funded by Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) representing a collective effort to cultivate resilience and prosperity, one step at a time.
Join us in celebrating this partnership and the promise it holds for Lebanon’s rural communities!

Djibouti’s agricultural landscape is fraught with challenges, including shifting weather patterns, water scarcity, and a lack of traditional knowledge among producers transitioning from nomadic to settled farming practices.
A feasibility study conducted by Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT in collaboration with Global Center on Adaptation and the Djiboutian government, as part of the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program #AAAP, a partnership between GCA and African Development Bank Group, identified digital technologies as a key tool for addressing these issues. The study prioritized seven digital solutions designed to transform Djibouti’s agricultural sector into a more #sustainable and #resilient system.

🤴 CGIAR's Climate-Smart Villages (CSV) initiative has made a significant contribution in Kenya's Nyando Basin.
By introducing a community-led approach, CGIAR empowered farmers in Nyando to collectively address challenges and implement climate-smart innovations. Through CSV, they introduced a new breed of goat that provided larger sizes, faster maturity, and increased milk production, enhancing food security and income.
Additionally, farmers implemented agroforestry practices, solar-powered irrigation, greenhouses, and efficient water management systems to tackle other challenges, such as deteriorating arable land and water scarcity.
The CSV model's sustainability is evident through the establishment of a collective
action fund, where farmers deposit profits and access loans for agricultural
innovations. Today, the success of the CSV model has spread to numerous communities worldwide, enabling farmers to secure a brighter future for their families and generations to come.

Contract farming is revolutionizing Lebanon's agriculture, providing crucial benefits amid economic challenges. This model ensures stable markets, access to quality inputs, and financial stability for farmers. Challenges such as contract enforcement and power imbalances are being addressed through clear contracts and empowerment initiatives. Enhanced productivity, risk mitigation, and increased income are tangible outcomes. Leveraging technology is streamlining processes, with projects like the USAID-funded "Lebanon Industry Value Chain Development” and Mercy Corps “Linkages projects” (Managed by Astral) showcasing its transformative power. Success stories, such as in the Bekaa Valley, demonstrate significant income and productivity improvements, showcasing the model's potential for broader application. Share your experiences and thoughts on how contract farming has impacted Lebanese agriculture.

LIVING LEGENDS IN THE PICTURE
ICT & Technology for Smart Farming for small farmers in the Kurdish region of Iraq-Iraq to contribute to irrigation and food security in rural communities that regularly experience drought. 🧅🌶🌍💪
In 2016, the OWC Kurdistan-Iraq team and OWC met for the first time in the Netherlands. Since then, we have been working together online on great projects in refugee camp schools in their area. For basic ICT training and English, including laptop and internet, so that youth can work together with young people in other countries. In September 2023 we met again to share ideas for change at the table of the OWC head office in Vlijmen, Netherlands. 😊
Mohammed, one of the team members, who teaches ICT, Technology and AI, had taken the initiative to make agricultural innovation possible for small-scale farmers using technology. In collaboration with students and farmers. Starting with an irrigation system that can easily be scaled up to many villages with the expertise of the entire team.
It was not easy to inspire farmers in their area - who are used to growing fruit and vegetables in the traditional and manual way - about the great benefits of technological solutions. But... the cool thing about OWC is: we never give up! 💪 And as a result, we always find solutions that works bottom up with 'no one left behind'.
After returning from the Netherlands, the team bought a piece of land themselves to start a Demo Center, where farmers and others could see with their own eyes how technology works. A perfect solution! Which is successful like in Nepal and Kenya, where Pradeep and Augustine also started their Demo Center to introduce technology to the people in their communities step by step.
