How much are human pressures threatening the stability, resilience and functioning of the Earth systems? Recommending a compelling new science paper published in Nature, authored by a group of scientists including Johan Rockström, Co-chair of the Earth Commission, about the Planetary Boundaries Framework. In this new review, scientists synthesize framework advancements, detailing its emergence and mainstreaming across scientific disciplines and society. In sum, the nine Planetary Boundaries capture the key functions regulating the Earth system. At the present moment, the safe operating space has already been transgressed for six of these. As highlighted in the report, the framework has been adopted by businesses and informed policy across the world, informing new thinking about fundamental justice concerns, and has inspired, among other concepts, the planetary commons, planetary health and doughnut economics. Going forward, future work must increase the precision and frequency of Planetary Boundaries analyses, and, together with Earth observation data analytics, produce a high-resolution and real-time state of planetary health. Translating Planetary Boundaries to finite budgets (for carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, land use, and use of green and blue water) creates scarcities with implications on cost and trade. As eloquently concluded: "Governing and monitoring Earth’s stability and resilience is not optional, it is a necessity given the risks of planetary state being destabilized. The Planetary Boundaries framework offers a much-needed complement to how sustainable development is understood and pursued, as evidenced by the broad scientific uptake of Planetary Boundaries science." It's indeed a quest to reach human prosperity and equity on a stable and resilient planet, within planetary boundaries, that provides all people, generations, communities and societies with a safe operating space on Earth. 🙏🏽🌍🌳 For more insights on the framework, and how to best integrate these finite planetary commons into economic theory, see full paper below or download in the following link: https://lnkd.in/gg85r_N7 Global Commons Alliance, Caroline Bryant-Bosa

Planet and people will prosper if resources are better shared. New research published today in The Lancet Planetary Health shows that the planet will only remain able to provide even a basic standard of living for everyone in the future if economic systems and technologies are dramatically transformed and critical resources are more fairly used, managed and shared. The report is co-authored by more than 60 leading natural and social scientists – including four from Griffith University from the Australian Rivers Institute – from the Earth Commission, which is an international science com. An important review and update to the Planetary Boundaries framework for sustainability has just been published (link below): "Human pressures have pushed the Earth system deep into the Anthropocene, threatening its stability, resilience and functioning. The Planetary Boundaries (PB) framework emerged against these threats, setting safe levels to the biophysical systems and processes that, with high likelihood, ensure life-supporting Holocene-like conditions. In this Review, we synthesize PB advancements, detailing its emergence and mainstreaming across scientific disciplines and society. The nine PBs capture the key functions regulating the Earth system. The safe operating space has been transgressed for six of these.. Human development within planetary boundaries defines sustainable development.. Each PB translates to a finite budget that the world must operate within, requiring strengthened global governance. The PB framework has been adopted by businesses and informed policy across the world, informing new thinking about fundamental justice concerns, and has inspired, among other concepts, the planetary commons, planetary health and doughnut economics. Future work must increase the precision and frequency of PB analyses, and, together with Earth observation data analytics, produce a high-resolution and real-time state of planetary health." Abstract Human pressures have pushed the Earth system deep into the Anthropocene, threatening its stability, resilience and functioning. The safe operating space has been transgressed for six of these. PB science is essential to prevent further Earth system risks and has sparked new research on the precision of safe boundaries. Human development within planetary boundaries defines sustainable development, informing advances in social sciences. 99% of ocean microbes have never been grown or studied in a lab. These microbes perform crucial functions that influence the health of the ocean and ultimately impact Earth’s climate. How can we shed light on their diversity and function? A group of researchers — Elisa Laiolo, Intikhab Alam, Tahira Jamil, Mahmut Uludag, Susana Agusti, Takashi GOJOBORI, Silvia Acinas, Josep M. Gasol, and Carlos Duarte — have created a new catalog of ocean DNA, compiled from an extraordinary amount of data from multiple ocean metagenomic studies.
