What is the state of the natural capital of the earth which supports all life? - The Planetary Boundaries Science (PBScience), a new initiative led by Johan Rockström and the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research has launched the Planetary Health Check (PHC), a first-of-its-kind scientific report and tool for the health of the Earth - The PHC combines pioneering Earth science, Earth observation data and multi-disciplinary thinking to quantify the planet’s health and inform solutions to reverse the impact of human activity on the planet. - This inaugural annual report represents a crucial step in monitoring and safeguarding Earth's stability, resilience, and life-support functions - The Planetary Boundaries (PBs) framework analyses and monitors the nine PB processes and systems that scientifically are proven to regulate the health of our planet and each of these processes is currently quantified by one or two different control variables. - The 2024 Planetary Health Check report reveals that six out of nine PB processes have breached the safe PB levels, with all six showing trends of increasing pressure in all control variables, suggesting further boundary transgression in the near future. Planet and people will prosper if resources are better shared. New research published today in The Lancet Planetary Health shows that the planet will only remain able to provide even a basic standard of living for everyone in the future if economic systems and technologies are dramatically transformed and critical resources are more fairly used, managed and shared. How much are human pressures threatening the stability, resilience and functioning of the Earth systems? Recommending a compelling new science paper published in Nature, authored by a group of scientists including Johan Rockström, Co-chair of the Earth Commission, about the Planetary Boundaries Framework. In this new review, scientists synthesize framework advancements, detailing its emergence and mainstreaming across scientific disciplines and society. In sum, the nine Planetary Boundaries capture the key functions regulating the Earth system. At the present moment, the safe operating space has already been transgressed for six of these. As highlighted in the report, the framework has been adopted by businesses and informed policy across the world, informing new thinking about fundamental justice concerns, and has inspired, among other concepts, the planetary commons, planetary health and doughnut economics. Going forward, future work must increase the precision and frequency of Planetary Boundaries analyses, and, together with Earth observation data analytics, produce a high-resolution and real-time state of planetary health. Translating Planetary Boundaries to finite budgets (for carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, land use, and use of green and blue water) creates scarcities with implications on cost and trade. As eloquently concluded: "Governing and monitoring Earth’s stability and resilience is not optional, it is a necessity given the risks of planetary state being destabilized. The Planetary Boundaries framework offers a much-needed complement to how sustainable development is understood and pursued, as evidenced by the broad scientific uptake of Planetary Boundaries science."
