Mediterranean and Black Sea countries agree on a common vision for sustainable aquaculture On December 5, 2024, over 30 countries gathered in Heraklion, Greece, for the largest regional conference on aquaculture, titled “Shaping the Future of Sustainable Aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.” Organized by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) and the Greek government, this significant event marks a pivotal moment in promoting sustainable aquaculture practices within the region. Participants emphasized key pillars for growth, including climate resilience, effective governance, innovation, and animal welfare, all essential for realizing a sustainable aquaculture sector. During the conference, a unified vision for aquaculture was articulated, addressing pressing challenges such as global food insecurity, climate change, and biodiversity loss. With aquaculture now a cornerstone for food security and economic development, the sector has seen remarkable growth in production and revenue over the last decade. Charlina Vitcheva, Director-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries at the European Commission, underscored the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to harness the potential of aquaculture—benefiting local communities and enhancing sustainability efforts. As discussions progressed, attendees identified five strategic priorities for sustainable aquaculture by 2030: strengthening food security, promoting ecosystem-based practices, enhancing governance, adopting innovative techniques, and ensuring social responsibility. With these priorities driving future actions, the conference outcomes will guide regional collaboration and policy-making, supporting a resilient aquaculture landscape that meets the needs of both people and the environment. Together, we are shaping a sustainable future for aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions! 🌱🌊 #Aquaculture #Sustainability #Mediterranean #CollaborativeGrowth #FoodSecurity #Biodiversity #GFCM https://lnkd.in/dufB3m9i

It is essential not only for meeting the world’s growing demand for seafood but also for reducing pressure on wild fisheries. As a company based in Prince Edward Island working in this industry, we at Onda are proud to work alongside industry, government, and academic partners to unlock the answers to aquaculture's most pressing challenges, ensuring sustainable practices, and strengthening our ocean economy. As we celebrate World Fisheries Day on November 21, it’s a meaningful time to reflect on the vital role aquaculture plays in Atlantic Canada. This region has become a global leader in sustainable aquaculture practices, supplying high-quality seafood and supporting our communities, local economy, and marine ecosystems. The region is supported by 700 different organizations that offer services or products in the industry and employs over 4000 Atlantic Canadians. Its seafood is shipped globally and enjoyed amongst friends & family from Summerside to Beijing. Together, let’s continue to champion Atlantic Canada’s aquaculture sector, fostering innovation and sustainability to ensure our oceans thrive for future generations. 🌊 💙🐟🌍 #WorldFisheriesDay #Aquaculture #AtlanticCanada #SustainableSeafood #OceanHealth #BlueEconomy #Onda #PEIProud

Climate Change is a key challenge for Croatian aquaculture and fisheries Aquaculture in Croatia is currently facing important challenges as climate change gradually influences its production systems. Increasing water temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and phenomena such as algal blooms affect not only fish health but also the productivity of aquaculture farms. In a recent event, it has been emphasized the urgency for innovative approaches to enhance resilience within this sector, which is vital for both local economies and food security. In response to these challenges, the Ministry of Agriculture has rolled out recently a National Aquaculture Development Plan aimed at incorporating climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. This plan focuses on utilizing innovative technologies and sustainable practices to improve production systems, such as recirculating aquaculture systems, which provide controlled environments and shorter production cycles. By prioritizing sustainable growth, Croatia can safeguard its aquaculture resources against the adverse effects of climate change. To maximize market potential and increase awareness of the benefits of aquaculture products, the ministry is actively promoting consumption through various campaigns. Engaging local communities and fostering partnerships among stakeholders will be instrumental in advancing these efforts. As we face the complexities of a changing environment, a united approach is essential for ensuring the sustainability and profitability of Croatian aquaculture. #Aquaculture #ClimateChange #Sustainability #FoodSecurity #Innovation #CroatiaAquaculture #Resilience https://lnkd.in/dC5wXESs

Dear Aquaculture Community, the Caribbean Aquaculture Education and Innovation Hub needs your help to send Caribbean Women Aquaculture Scientists to LACC World Aquaculture Society in Medellin Colombia. September 24, 2024. Donate at the link below. Any amount is appreciated https://lnkd.in/dGfrD99D In light of Hurricane Beryl, which has caused much destruction in the Caribbean, we can see the need for more active research and development to create innovative solutions for climate-resilient aquatic species, structures, and technologies within the aquaculture sector. Caribbean Aquaculture Scientists are the least acknowledged of the Sciences although they are as equally important to contributing to food security and marine conservation in the region. In addition, the majority of Caribbean Aquaculture Scientists are women many of whom have not been acknowledged for their contribution to the research that they are conducting. The cost of attending conferences is prohibitive to our scientists. Where other regions are fully supported and have a large turnout at conferences, you will see little to non-Caribbean-born representatives. FAO CARICOM: Caribbean Community CRFM Communications I am revisiting the presentation that I gave last year in October at the Caribbean Aquaculture Week in Nassau where I discussed why the Caribbean needs more Research, Development, and Innovation in Aquaculture, Blue Foods and Mariculture for Caribbean Small Island States. If you have not already please take a look at our need to change this situation and culture https://lnkd.in/duiFrJrW #bluefood #caribbean #aquaculture
