I had lots of fun attending A16Z GAMES SPEEDRUN's demo day. Here's my perspective on the event and why gaming startups can supplant entire industries. Here are trends I saw in the cohort: - There's a shift in focus towards Discord and WebGL - Lots of very good ideas for mobile apps centered around gamifying positive consumer behaviors (examples included mental health, dating and healthcare) - Impressive early traction for pre-seed and seed stage companies. - More importantly many startups have retention! Gaming is one of the best investing opportunities: - Most popular form of entertainment - Passionate customers - Almost no competition from other investors That's why I'm interested in the space for INTJ Fund. Startups from this cohort already have more peak concurrent users with less than a year of development than large studios with five years of development and hundreds of millions (ie Concord). Duolingo is often branded as a popular language app. The truth is that Duolingo is one of the world's most popular gaming apps with a language focus. I think a lot of early stage consumer VCs should consider this perspective. Thanks for being welcoming and making me feel seen Caitlin Cooke. This is the first networking event where I talked about Teamfight Tactics and Crusader Kings and the other person played the games before as well. I always appreciate meeting INTJ women founders like Sofie Marien! Excited to see how you change the mental health industry! I'm looking forward to making more friends throughout TECH WEEK by a16z. If you don't catch me in SF this week, I will be in LA next week! #SFTechWeek #videogames #INTJ
It was great to meet you as well! Couldn’t agree more about Duolingo! And truly gamified apps aren’t just leaderboards and collecting points. You start with a simple level/experience which increases in difficulty as the user progresses and makes them feel good about themselves as they constantly improve. We’ve seen from our app NoMi that the payoff is so rewarding, people become hooked. I’d recommend the book Game Thinking by Amy Jo Kim if you want to learn more about making gamified apps
So great meeting you!! 💜 games 💜
