A ruling by the British Columbia Supreme Court has cleared the way for Surrey Police Service to take over from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police | Gendarmerie royale du Canada (RCMP) as the force of jurisdiction from next month; Royal Roads University Associate Lecturer Dr Bryce Casavant believes the Federal Government support for the move to municipal policing in Surrey could see other communities around Canada follow suit. ❝The British Columbia Supreme Court’s ruling against keeping the RCMP in Surrey charts a path for other Canadian communities to make the transition to municipal policing.❞ ❝In its archival notes about this period [1951], the RCMP Veterans’ Association said: ‘It was quickly discovered that none of these (RCMP) members had worked in a municipal policing environment.’ A few decades later, this situation only grew worse for Surrey.❞ ❝Chief Lipinski aims to make his vision for a future-focused, community-centric Surrey Police Service a reality by integrating co-operative and modern approaches in technology and focusing on officer and community wellness, human dynamics, transparency and sound leadership.❞ ❝For Canadian municipalities with RCMP contracts, the BC decision suggests it may be time to hang up the spurs and ditch the Red Serge. But community-centric policing models must allow municipal and provincial agencies to develop alongside their federal counterparts with support, not fear.❞ https://lnkd.in/eDX4xSFe #lawenforcement #policing #police

A future made in Australia commands ideas made in Australia, but also requires adequate funding to see those ideas embedded. Research funding celebrates innovation and novelty, but impact comes from sustainable implementation. Australian researchers generate thousands of fantastic initiatives through their work; we need to make sure we adequately resource the sustained implementation of those initiatives if we want to reap the rewards of evidence-based change. Good initiatives shouldn't expire when the grants that fund their implementation do.

Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." Today, this principle remains a beacon of our shared humanity. Yet, it is unacceptable to witness many countries—once victims of violations themselves—now undermining these fundamental rights. They often resort to justifications that allow them to oppress entire populations, invade nations, or hold communities hostage. We must confront these injustices and refuse to turn a blind eye. The responsibility lies with each of us to advocate for the rights of all individuals and to foster a world where dignity and equality are upheld for everyone. Let us strive to honor the spirit of brotherhood that this declaration embodies. #HumanRights #Dignity #Equality #UniversalDeclaration

In their collaborative endeavours within the men's behaviour space, Comunicare has praised WACOSS for their consistent engagement in celebratory behaviour and utilisation of power and control tactics. This association, however, exhibits bias by unfairly excluding Aboriginal Community Controlled Organizations (ACCOs) such as the Aboriginal Males Healing Centre (AMHC) from opportunities to deliver culturally appropriate, trauma-informed residential healing and well-being services for Aboriginal males in the Pilbara region. The lack of inclusion has resulted in Communicare's establishment of a monopoly in the residential men's behaviour change sector in Western Australia through its "breathing space" program. Simultaneously, WACOSS continues to offer steadfast support and advocacy. It is foreseeable that the influential standing of WACOSS and Communicare as powerbrokers with the current government will secure substantial funding for the "breathing space" program while numerous ACCOs, such as the AMHC, struggle to obtain support. The prevailing stereotype perpetuates the notion that Aboriginal men eschew tea consumption and that black male leadership is often misinterpreted as "angry," even though our passion is primarily focused on addressing human rights violations. Furthermore, when we assert expertise on objective and subjective matters, we are unjustly labelled as "emotional and toxic." These actions are indicative of the utilisation of white vulnerability tactics to stifle and discredit black male knowledge while simultaneously positioning white female and male individuals as the ultimate authorities. Establishing environments that facilitate uninhibited self-expression and recognition of individuals for their expertise and contributions is a pivotal step toward fostering a more inclusive and just society. Through candid discourse, education, and advocacy, we can confront preconceptions and endeavour to comprehend and honour the varied experiences and identities of all individuals. Open dialogue, education, and advocacy are indispensable tools for confronting biases and embracing diverse human experiences and identities. Through these concerted efforts, we can strive towards a society where diversity is not merely tolerated but actively celebrated.
This morning, I attended a morning tea with Premier Cook and Minister Winton, and other members of the FDV Taskforce. Premier Cook thanked members of the Taskforce for their work and acknowledged that there is a lot more that needs to be done. The group talked about the importance of a lived experience working group that has been established, which is essential to centering the voices of victim-survivors if we are to make real change through policy development and service design.

I’m not being a hater. Let’s have a serious discussion: Why does any Institution of Higher Education feel that having alums who are delegates to a Political Convention is newsworthy? THERE IS NO PURPOSE! That university is trying to engage in DEMOCRAT PARTY GOTV efforts. Their federal funding should be CUT! There are probably 50 Carolina alums who are delegates. A&T has several delegates and you don’t see their University promoting such a common occurrence. I encourage the Administration at NCCU to stay out of politics and focus on fundraising (which last I read, was quite pathetic). Get some of your alums to stop buying BMWs and give you $100 and perhaps we wouldn’t have to utilize so much of our tax dollars on landscaping over in Durham. Black Institutions must stop playing SMALL BALL. This type of BUSHLEAGUE activity is why Blacks as myself, who took Honors and AP courses and excelled DO NOT EVEN APPLY TO THESE SCHOOLS. #GlorifiedHighSchoolers #PoliticallyCHEAPpeople 🤦

📣Again, one size does not fit all. 📣Please repeat and repost. ➡️ The evidence is in plain sight and well documented from the people who work within this sector and who study it, the people who benefit from the range of safe wrap around services offered and their families, colleagues and friends. It affects people of ALL walks of life: employed, not employed; houses, unhoused, etc. It doesn’t discriminate. ➡️ Non-pharmaceutical opioids (mainly fentanyl) directly contributed to over 90% of opioid-related deaths in construction workers, 4 out of 5 in deaths occurred in private residence. 📣Lives are vastly impacted by the recent announcement. 🤔 If we were talking about a physical health crisis, would we have such oppositional conversations and viewpoints? #HarmReduction saves lives.

What can we do in our communities to ensure the unhoused are not facing additional challenges obtaining permanent housing due to arrests associated with living on the street? • Communities should engage with local law enforcement to understand their policies and intentions moving forward. •Create and maintain relationships with local law enforcement. •Designate drop off sites for police officers encountering the homeless in lieu of arrest. •Address the lack of available and affordable housing in communities, along with access to funding and support. •Local social service agencies and CoC’s should continue to collaborate, partner, and focus on implementing action plans. •Expand shelter capacity. •Continue to make emergency shelters welcoming and ensure they are filled with necessary and engaging programming. •Inceased legislative advocacy. Your thoughts?

Village of Hempstead’s State Of The Village Address Mayor Waylyn Hobbs, Jr. recently held his 3rd State of the Village address at Kennedy Memorial Park. Some of the accomplishments the Mayor spoke about included: • Repaving roads, not just filling potholes and getting a commitment from the County to put over one million dollars aside to repave county roads in Hempstead. • Completion of a comprehensive study of the entire village water and sewer system. The village will be constructing a state of the art water treatment facility in order to provide quality and healthy drinking water to village residents. • The village has purchased two new fire trucks and ten vehicles for the Department of Public Works. • Replacing outdated parking meters. • Addressing the sewer infrastructure in downtown. • Securing $5 million dollars to assist qualified homeowner in the village to make repairs on such items as roofs. • Put in place initiatives that reduced crime in the village, making the village safer than ever. Future aspirations include updating parks and recreational facilities, continue downtown redevelopment to bring young people, healthcare workers, police officers, and such to the village, and increasing the amount of MTA police in the train station area. Mayor Hobbs announced he will be seeking reelection in 2025, noting, “I’m not about enabling people. I’m about empowering people. More challenges exist, but by working together we can overcome every challenge we face.” Click here to view entire State of the Village. https://lnkd.in/eQqaW7QD
