Did you know that nearly 50% of pre-clinical trials (animal studies) fail 😑, often leading to the rejection of potentially life-saving drugs? This happens largely because these drugs aren't deemed safe for animals, despite the fact that animal biology differs significantly from human biology. What if we're missing out on treatments that could be safe and effective for humans? It's time to rethink 🤔 our reliance on animal models and explore alternative approaches that better predict human responses. 🧬 #HumanHealth #AnimalTesting #iPSC #OOC #NAM

At SWC, we support open dialogue on the use of animals in research and we are committed to transparent communication of our research. Today the UK Home Office published the 2023 Animal Research Statistics report. Alongside research organisations across the country, we’ve published our annual #AnimalStats, explaining the numbers and types of animals used at SWC in 2023. View our latest statistics and find out more about how we are minimising the use of animals while advancing #neuroscience research: https://lnkd.in/euGkkiwA #AnimalResearch #ConcordatOpenness Understanding Animal Research

Crows can learn to count like young children Crows, known for their remarkable intelligence, have demonstrated an impressive ability to count and associate numbers with values, according to a recent study led by researchers from the University of Tübingen’s animal physiology lab in Germany. The findings show that crows can not only count up to four but also match the number of calls they make when shown a number. #earlylearning #preschoolmath

In 2022, I successfully completed the 22-hour online course “Principles of Working with Laboratory Animals”, organized by the National Institute for Medical Research Development (NIMAD). This course covered the following topics: • Animal research ethics • Alternatives to laboratory animals • Literature review and research subject selection • Principles of designing international studies • Sample size calculation • Biology of common laboratory animals • Laboratory animal husbandry • Selection of animal models • Preparation of research project applications for the ethics committee • Safety in animal studies • Laboratory animal transportation • Principles of drug administration to animals • Principles of sampling from laboratory animals • Pain and distress management in laboratory animals This 22-hour training not only enhanced my understanding of ethical and scientific principles in animal research but also strengthened my skills in in vivo imaging research with animal models. #ResearchEthics #LaboratoryAnimals #InVivoImaging #BiomedicalResearch #AnimalModel #EthicalResearch #ProfessionalDevelopment #MedicalImaging

Database for animal-free methods: already over 2,000 entries In July 2020, the Non-Animal-Technologies (NAT) database was published with 250 entries describing research and testing methods that are free from animal experimentation. To date, the number of entries has increased eightfold, and currently, the 2,000 mark has been exceeded. The NAT Database is available to students and staff at over 340 university libraries. Additionally, it is utilized by regulatory authorities in assessing applications for animal experimentation. The database is continuously expanded and freely available. #NonAnimalTechnologies #NAT #NAMs #NewApproachMethods #AnimalFreeResearch #Database https://lnkd.in/eVxb_f72
