Exciting news - B&Q announced yesterday, that it has reached agreements to acquire three leasehold stores, currently trading as Homebase, in the Republic of Ireland for a total purchase price of c.£3.2m. The three stores complement B&Q’s existing network of eight stores in the Republic of Ireland, representing strategic additions to its estate. Graham Bell, B&Q CEO, comments: “We’re delighted to be adding these three stores to our fantastic store network. We’re determined to give home improvers the choice and convenience they deserve, and these locations need a home improvement store that fulfils their need. “We look forward to swiftly concluding the purchase and converting the stores to the B&Q brand and offer, and to welcoming our new customers to the stores and new colleagues to the B&Q family.” Read the full announcement via the original post source - Kingfisher plc 📣

Shopping centre manager Praxis Real Estate Management has pulled out of the race to take over Capital & Regional, confirming this morning that it had “no intention” to make a bid for the mall owner. The group had signalled its interest in the company in early July and had until 12 September to make a firm offer. NewRiver REIT plc REIT now remains the only potential suitor left in the race for Capital & Regional. Despite Praxis’ change of heart, there does seem to be continued and growing positivity in the retail market as budget supermarket chain Aldi UK announces its largest package of annual investment to accelerate its expansion across Britain. The group is to invest some £800m in expanding its 1,000-strong store portfolio across the UK, with at least 23 new locations opening before the end of the year. The £800m investment this year is part of a £1.4bn two-year investment plan in the UK, which will see the group open new stores, refurbish 100 existing stores and expand its network of distribution centres, and comes off the back of record trading. Aldi UK chief executive Giles Hurley said: “British shoppers are voting with their feet and choosing Aldi as their first-choice supermarket. We’re responding with our biggest ever annual investment in Britain. For every £1 of profit generated last year, we’re investing £2 this year – opening more stores and building the supply infrastructure to bring high-quality, affordable groceries to millions more families the length and breadth of Britain.” Elsewhere in the world of retail and leisure, Drake and Samuel L Jackson-backed fried chicken chain Dave's Hot Chicken has found its first UK roost, opening a 3,500 sq ft shop at Criterion Capital Limited’s Trocadero. The site is the first of 60 planned opens in the UK from the US chain. KLM Real Estate is leading the hunt for the brand, P-THREE advised Criterion on the deal. And the team at Scarborough Group International have failed to be spooked by the tough world of cinema and have brought the ODEON Cinemas Group back to Scarborough after a near 30 year absence. Aggression typically escalates through four stages: early warning signs, hostile, threatening, and assaultive. By recognizing the early warning signs, there is the opportunity to act immediately to de-escalate the situation before it progresses to more severe stages.

This expansion is big for Wawa as they continue to build in their home market as they also continue to expand into new states. Unfortunately while they do this as well as other chains that are going into new markets it is killing the small guys. Not only the franchise owners of 7-Eleven stores that have to compete but even the small business Independent stores. These guys work in their stores open to close to provide for their families. It’s definitely becoming harder and you can see that by the drastic decrease in independent retail accounts since 2020. There’s been 20k+ accounts that have closed in the independent convenience retail channel and still going. While so many say support small business they seldom thing of the c&g channel. A couple of the main drivers of this in my opinion, Covid has driven the need for cleanliness and people feel the chains have a cleaner store. While a good reason but how clean are these chains? Have you checked their health department scores?? I know theirs time I go into a restroom at a chain and they are absolutely horrendous. Now my other opinion, a lot of these independents that don’t have thin “G” in C&G have to face the facts that “one stop shop” is a necessity. People’s time is more valuable than ever. Unfortunate to see the iconic Fred Segal be the latest to bite the Chapter 7 bait.
