As the EU sets its sights on 2030 climate goals, car manufacturers are accelerating their efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of every vehicle. The question remains: Can they balance production demands with ecological responsibility? 🤔 Let’s dive deeper into the key areas of impact and progress in car production: 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🔋 Producing a single car requires 𝟮.𝟮 𝗠𝗪𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆—enough to power an average household for 3 months. 💡 Despite a 𝟮𝟬% 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟱, the shift toward electrification and advanced materials adds complexity. Automakers are increasingly turning to renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies in manufacturing plants to close the gap. 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗨𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 💧 On average, 𝟯.𝟵 𝗺³ 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 is used to produce one car, including processes like cooling, washing, and painting. ♻️ Modern water recycling systems are helping to reduce waste. Some manufacturers have achieved zero water discharge by reusing every drop in their production lines. 𝗖𝗢₂ 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 🌫️ The industry has slashed 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝟱𝟴𝟴 𝗸𝗴 𝗖𝗢₂, down from 837 kg in 2005—a 30% reduction. ⚡ However, producing batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) can significantly increase emissions during manufacturing. The challenge lies in making battery production greener while maintaining overall reductions. 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 🗑️ Each car generates 𝟮𝟬𝟬 𝗸𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 during production, from leftover materials to packaging. 🔄 Thanks to advanced recycling methods, a majority of this waste—up to 95% in some plants—is now reused or repurposed, cutting landfill contributions to a minimum. Despite these improvements, the transition to a fully sustainable model is daunting: 👉 EVs reduce tailpipe emissions but require energy-intensive processes for their batteries. 👉 More plants need to integrate solar, wind, and geothermal energy. 👉 From design to disposal, every stage of a car’s life cycle needs to prioritize sustainability. These changes are critical for achieving the ambitious 2030 climate goals and maintaining global leadership in sustainable manufacturing. 🚗 The importance of sustainable transportation Sustainability is one of the cornerstones of our company, and something we embed in everything we do. In celebration of European Mobility Week, we want to highlight our efforts in electrifying our fleet. We are committed to electric and hydrogen solutions for our transportation needs. Some numbers: 🔌 43% of our company cars are electric: We have many more electric vehicles on order and will continue to replace our fossil-fuel cars with electric ones. 🔋 10 electric vans on the road: We currently have 10 electric vans for transporting goods to our sites, and this number will expand in the coming years. 🚲 Almost 100 leased bikes: Many of our colleagues bike to work, which we strongly support as a company. 💧 4 hydrogen pool cars: These cars can be fueled at our headquarters and are available for use by our colleagues. Soon, we will be producing the hydrogen ourselves in a 100% sustainable process. We still have a long way to go to make all our transportation fully sustainable, but we strive to improve every day.
