Howden Professional Sports has released their annual Men’s European Football Injury Index for the 2023/24 season. This detailed report offers a wealth of data on the injury landscape across Europe’s top five leagues, providing valuable insights that can be applied to understanding player health trends worldwide. Over the coming weeks, I will delve into this data, sharing my professional analysis and conclusions. My aim is to guide the football community on how to make smarter, data-driven decisions to safeguard player health, reduce injury risk, and streamline the rehabilitation and return-to-play processes. For this first post, let’s consider one of Howden’s key findings: a 4% rise in injuries last season. Despite investments in injury prevention programs and technology, the injury rate continues to climb. Here are some initial observations: 1-Clubs, even with new prevention initiatives and expert hires, have not managed to halt the injury epidemic, which has been building long before Howden began tracking these trends. 2-Cutting-edge technology designed to prevent injuries has fallen short of expectations. 3-The financial burden of injuries—seen in the cost of salaries for sidelined players—has escalated as a result. 4-Beyond salaries, injuries also incur substantial medical, rehabilitation, sponsorship, player devaluation, and personal costs. Key takeaways: 1-Howden’s data supports a perspective I’ve advocated for years: injuries are largely the outcome of inadequate academy development, limited technical skill acquisition, poor training methodologies, and a lack of proper player development monitoring. 2-Neither technology nor injury prevention “gurus” will solve this issue. The solution lies in individualized, evidence-based analysis and tailored training and competition strategies. 3-Clubs can drastically reduce injury-related costs by adopting rational, personalized processes—at a far lower cost than paying for inactive players. 4-To truly minimize injury risk, we must focus on long-term player development, starting from early age (around age 10) and continuing through their professional careers. 5-“Injury prevention” is a misleading concept. The goal is not to prevent injuries but to reduce their likelihood and impact. If you're interested in learning how to implement a rational process to reduce injury risks for your players, contact me at spandrelsport@gmail.com.

Some great stats here showing the true value of getting more people, more active. Well done to everyone for getting behind it and making it happen.
That’s a wrap for the AuSactive Million Moves Campaign! Sunshine Coast residents stepped up to the challenge of performing 75 moves a day for 21 days, representing 75% of inactive Australians. With over 2 million moves logged, two thirds reported having at least one chronic illness. The largest group of participants were between 46 and 55 years old, a demographic with the opportunity to reverse health risks through exercise. This campaign exemplifies the fitness industry's obligation of taking action, making a difference, and promoting the benefits of exercise to those in need. Thank you to all who supported this vital initiative. Especially our federal MPs, Hot91.1fm, The Thompson Institute, Uni SC, Youi, Comlink, Sunshine Coast Council, Sunshine Coast hospitals, AUSactive members and the many others who were generous with their time and commitment. Together, we've made an impact on the Sunshine Coast; now, let's take it national! 💪🇦🇺 #millionmoves #AUSactive #exerciseismedicine #fitness #chronicdisease

Understanding Player Data: A Key to Enhancing Player Care and Support In today's global sports industry, the well-being of players is paramount. To provide the best support, player care staff must delve deeper into understanding player data, encompassing their geographical origins, cultural backgrounds, living environments, and the organisational structures of coaching staff and clubs. 🌍 Cultural Awareness: Knowing where players are from worldwide enriches our understanding of their unique cultural backgrounds. This awareness allows us to tailor our support and communication strategies, ensuring they feel understood and valued. 🏡 Living Environments: Understanding where players live, whether in their home countries or abroad (international sports), helps us address their specific needs and challenges. Whether it’s adjusting to a new culture or managing homesickness, being aware of their living conditions is crucial for their mental and emotional well-being. 📊 Organisational Structures: Familiarity with the coaching staff and club structures enables us to streamline communication and coordination. This ensures that player care initiatives are well-integrated into the broader organisational framework, leading to more effective support. By leveraging player data, we can create a holistic support system that not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters long-term well-being. It’s about creating an environment where every player feels supported, understood, and empowered to thrive both on and off the field. #PlayerCare #SportsManagement #CulturalAwareness #PlayerWellBeing #DataDrivenSupport

Day 3 of making a video for LinkedIn every day for two weeks. Today I talk about a conversation I just had with a medical provider, and how I'm helping make sure she gets to have dinner with her family and see her kid's little league games every day. Tried not to make this into too much of a commercial, but this is something I'm proud of and chose to make this my video content for today. Tomorrow I'll do some stand-up! 😜 #providerwellbeing #healthcare

Excited to share a clip from my conversation with NFL legend Greg Olsen about Players Health's role in youth sports safety. We discussed how we're connecting the dots between guidance and compliance, including our work helping pass groundbreaking legislation in Colorado (more details on that coming soon in a blog post!). It's incredible to see the impact we're making at the policy level to protect young athletes. #YouthSports #AthleteSafety #SportsBusiness
