Though my graphic design skills have much room for improvement, I believe the message encoded in this infographic is unignorably important for leaders across the globe. If we are to meet our ambitious societal, environmental, and economic goals - all of which are intricately intertwined - we must quickly find new ways of thinking and doing together. Aligning with the SDGs is imperative. I do acknowledge that there are flaws with the SDGs. However, they are, for the most part, goals that humanity has collectively agreed to work on for the betterment of all. How often do all 191 UN Member States agree on something? Agreement on these goals is in itself somewhat astonishing. Now with the targets set, institutions, individuals, communities, and corporations are free to choose the pathways they see as most effective to reach them. This requires coordinated and widespread innovation. This leads to the question, how can we develop ecosystems that foster such innovation? As we highlight in our paper, though scaling remains a challenge, startups are particularly well suited to address multiple goals rapidly. Due to their unique structure, they can bring much-needed disruption in otherwise status quo -sticky, or underserved markets. To best enable them to do so, ecosystem actors, aided by policymakers, must together craft the right support baskets, considerate of their ecosystem's stage of development and of the local cultural particularities that may either hinder or bolster support strategies. This is a topic I had the chance and pleasure to work on during my internship with ERIA: Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia, and through their policy paper on the ASEAN innovation ecosystem. To read the full piece, please follow the link in Giulia Ajmone Marsan's post. Though my thanks are long overdue, I find them better late than never. I wish to extend my deepest appreciation to the wonderful ERIA Digital Innovation and Sustainable Economy Centre (E-DISC) team. Giulia Ajmone Marsan, your insightfulness and dynamism are invigourating. Satria Muhammad, Fatih Abdurrahman, Adelia Rahmawati, and so many more, you all were incredibly welcoming and bright colleagues and friends. To all of you termia kasih.
