Slovak Zuzana-2   This is a Slovak Zuzana-2, 155 mm, self-propelled, howitzer that has been hit by a Russian Lancet drone.   Slovakia has, so far, supplied twenty-four of these to Ukraine, with more scheduled to be supplied in the future. This is the second one to be destroyed, with another one damaged, in Ukraine.   The Zuzana-2 is a modern, self-propelled, artillery system mounted on a modified Tatra 8×8 chassis. Following a Europe-wide selection process, Alzchem Group AG has been awarded an investment grant of EUR 34.4 million by the EU Commission as part of the ASAP (“Act in Support of Ammunition Production”) funding instrument. Alzchem Group AG wants to use the funds over an investment period of two and a half years to increase the production capacity of nitroguanidine and to modernize and expand the existing facilities for the production of guanidine nitrate. Guanidine nitrate is a precursor of nitroguanidine, which is used in crop protection, as a propellant for airbags and, increasingly, in defense technology. Funding for the project was approved in principle and published today by the EU Commission, in consultation with the member states; the final allocation will be made upon conclusion of a corresponding grant agreement, expected to be signed in May 2024. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak #Alzchem https://lnkd.in/diB3Wnmq

The downfall of the Shah and the Iranian hostage crisis - how much did they influence Americans' reaction to Soviet policy in Afghanistan? ZB: I think the crisis in Iran heightened our sense of vulnerability in so far as that part of the world is concerned. After all, Iran was one of the two pillars on which both stability and our political preeminence in the Persian Gulf rested. Once the Iranian pillar had collapsed, we were faced with the possibility that one way or another, before too long, we may have either a hostile Iran on the northern shore of the Persian Gulf facing us, or we might even have the Soviets there; and that possibility arose very sharply when the Soviets marched into Afghanistan. If they succeed in occupying it, Iran would be even more vulnerable to the Soviet Union, and in any case, the Persian Gulf would be accessible even to Soviet tactical air force from bases in Afghanistan. Therefore, the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan was viewed by us as of serious strategic consequence, irrespective of whatever may have been the Soviet motives for it. Our view was the objective consequences would be very serious, irrespective of what may or may not have been the subjective motives for the Soviet action. https://lnkd.in/daaxJqJt

Not surprised to see the National Academies of Sciences study call for #CFATS reauthorization in one of their recommendations, stating "Congress should immediately reauthorize the CFATS program and consider long-term reauthorization". The report notes "CFATS reauthorization is supported by the chemical industry, the American Chemical Society, and this Committee". #ChemicalSecurity affects us all with 89.5 million people living within two miles of a high-risk facility here in the US. #CFATS worked and helped our industry partners #SecureChemicals to keep us all safe. https://lnkd.in/ecfmn_Hd
