As we approach the New Year, take a moment to reflect on your leadership journey over the past year. What challenges did you face, and what successes stand out? For me, my biggest challenge this year was keeping cool while our house purchase dragged on and on and on... Whilst my biggest success was throwing my first successful pottery pieces. Use this time to set goals, identify areas for growth, and share your reflections with your team. Embracing a mindset of growth and openness will inspire those you lead to pursue their own goals with renewed motivation.

Remember, you hired them for their skills, so let them shine. You trust them because you have fostered a culture of valuing ideas and collaboration; let them make mistakes. Your job as a leader is to facilitate opportunities and encourage your team to rise to them—let them take the credit for the wins and the work. By freely giving these things to your team, YOU will become legendary through their greatness. They will become legendary through your leadership. It's a cycle.

Being a leader is about more than a title—it is about how you show up, serve, and empower others. Over the years, I have gathered invaluable lessons about leadership that have shaped how I lead the team. Leadership is much more than a role; it is about the actions we take every day to uplift others and stand for what’s right. When we lead with integrity, empathy, and purpose, we inspire change not only in our immediate circles but in the world around us. We create a lasting impact that reaches far beyond the boardroom. When I look back, my most powerful lessons didn’t come from success—they came from moments where I had to rebuild, rethink, and rise again.

Great leadership starts with understanding and investing in people. The most effective leaders are those who take the time to truly know their team— recognizing each individual's strengths, understanding their challenges, and supporting their aspirations. This level of dedication creates trust, loyalty, and an environment where people feel valued and motivated to bring their best selves to work. Leadership isn't just about making decisions; it's about lifting others and inspiring them to grow. If you're ready to take your leadership skills to the next level and empower your team.

The shift from expectations to appreciations is transformative in leadership. We often focus on setting expectations and ambitious goals. But remember, appreciation is just as important. We set goals every quarter. Yet, showing appreciation for your team should be a daily practice. They need to hear and see how much you respect and appreciate their effort. Feeling it inside is not enough. It needs to be shown and spoken.

Always be firm-fair-and consistent with your leadership. Hold everyone to a high standard and help them get there. Don’t believe in excuses without a solution. Keep helping others to be better than what they were yesterday and continue to let them know there are a myriad of ways to get there. Being direct is just one of many and needed at times. People don’t always like being pushed into being better but in the end, you will always see positive results and see the appreciation.
