HEMORRHAGIC ENCEPHALOPATHIES AND MYELOPATHIES Great review article published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science by Koen Santifort from IVC/Evidensia Small Animal Referral Arnhem, Netherland, and Prof Simon Platt from our Vet Oracle Teleradiology team. This article proposea an etiologic classification system for both intraparenchymal hemorrhagic encephalopathy and myelopathy following a review of the literature detailing the presentation, diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis of these diseases. You can read this article in full with the following link: https://lnkd.in/eV_gWFEW Below are MR images of a dog with a territorial infarct in the neurovascular territory of the left middle cerebral artery which has undergone secondary hemorrhagic transformation. This MRI was submitted to us for reporting at Vet Oracle Teleradiology a couple of years ago by Emili Alcoverro from Chestergates referral.

MRI OF METABOLIC AND NEURODEGENERATIVE ENCEPHALOPATHIES Fantastic multicentre descriptive study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science by Maria Miguel-Garces under the supervision of our Vet Oracle Teleradiology head of neuroimaging Ines Carrera. This paper provides an excellent resource to help in the MR diagnosis of metabolic and neurodegenerative encephalopathies. Have a go at trying to identify these conditions on the images below! https://lnkd.in/eJuyNQ3g Enjoy the reading. Highly recommend!

GRANULOPRIVAL CEREBELLAR CORTICAL DEGENERATION Nice case report published as early view in JVIM by Thomas Mignan from Dovecote Veterinary Hospital, UK, and colleagues. The MRI of one of the cases presented was initially submitted to us at Vet Oracle Teleradiology and reported by Prof Simon Platt. Cerebellar cortical degeneration (CCD) described a group of diseases characterised by postnatal degeneration predominantly affecting the cerebellar cortex. CCD is classified according to the primary cell target. Both dogs in this case report were immature dogs with progressive cerebellar signs. MRI revealed in both dogs reduced volume of the cerebellar and widening of the cerebellar fissure. Histopathological examination identified marked diffuse thinning of the granular cell layer with almost complete loss of the granular cell neurons, providing a definitive diagnosis of granuloprival CCD. Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is the most common heart disease in dogs, and remains a debilitating condition despite recent advances in its treatment and management. We recently funded a master’s degree by research at The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies to determine whether arteries from dogs with MMVD show the same problems with constricting and dilating seen in humans with heart disease. Student Marco Mazzarella describes successfully validating the ‘gold standard’ technique of isometric myography to measure arterial endothelial dysfunction and explains how project findings could improve understanding of disease pathophysiology and help identify new therapeutic targets for MMVD. The July (61(4)) issue of Veterinary Pathology is currently available online. The issue has an incredible breadth or articles on swine models in biomedical research, SARS-CoV-2 in nondomestic felids, Mannhemmia-associated abomasitis in lambs, and myeloid hyperactivation in humanized mice (just to name a few). https://lnkd.in/g_B7GpAR

How long do steroids interfere cortisol levels to diagnose hypoadrenocorticism in our patients? Did you know that even relatively short courses of prednisolone or other intermediate-acting steroids (> 7 days) can impact cortisol levels in dogs after discontinuation? A recent study found that while some dogs recover HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis function within a few days of stopping glucocorticoids, others take much longer—sometimes over 8 weeks! This variability can complicate interpretation of cortisol levels, especially when assessing for hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease). In addition, recovery time was not linked to drug choice, dose, frequency, or even patient size. If you want to know more, join us today at 1pm UK time to discuss this and more in the Small Animal Medicine Hub. Sign up via bit.ly/4bc0X0y #SAMEhub #CanineHealth
