NEWS: Iowa State University Dedicates First Phase of Veterinary Diagnostic Lab -- Iowa State University opened the first phase of the new Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in March of 2024. Located on the College of Veterinary Medicine campus in Ames, the 90,000-sf building houses essential infrastructure for sample receiving, pathology, bacteriology, necropsy, and histopathology. Strang Design provided integrated design services for the $75 million project, which leverages effective and efficient process flows to support an extremely high volume of testing. Featuring BSL-3 suites for the detection and study of animal diseases, the two-story development includes specialized labs for particular functions, as well as adaptable research settings that can support a variety programmatic requirements. A multipurpose conference venue accommodates presentations, lectures, and events. The Weitz Company Company began construction in March of 2021 on the facility, which represents the first part of a $141.5 million project to replace Patterson Hall. Ground was broken in April of 2024 on the second phase, a 78,500-sf addition housing offices, research space, and laboratory services such as molecular diagnostics and genetic sequencing. HEMORRHAGIC ENCEPHALOPATHIES AND MYELOPATHIES Great review article published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science by Koen Santifort from IVC/Evidensia Small Animal Referral Arnhem, Netherland, and Prof Simon Platt from our Vet Oracle Teleradiology team. This article proposea an etiologic classification system for both intraparenchymal hemorrhagic encephalopathy and myelopathy following a review of the literature detailing the presentation, diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis of these diseases. Improving the productivity of MSC-derived EV cultures: in their latest study, Angela M. Gaesser and collaborators at University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine contrasted extracellular vesicle production from equine bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells expanded using a stirred bioreactor (3-D) to those expanded via traditional monolayer (2-D) culture. Additionally, they assessed the impact of two different types of media: DMEM-based media supplemented with FBS and commercially available media formulated for bioreactor culture (CM) https://lnkd.in/e8an3fQB They observed that although 3-D culture enhanced the quantity of EVs produced per BM-MSC when utilizing CM media, the overall number of EVs isolated remained unchanged.
