In its split verdict on approval for environmental release of genetically modified (GM) mustard crop, the Supreme Court has on Tuesday directed the Centre to formulate a national policy with regard to GM crops for research, cultivation, trade and commerce in the country. A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Sanjay Karol differed on the contentious decision of October 18, 2022, when the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) — a statutory body under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) and regulator of genetically modified organisms in the country recommended the environmental release. For the first time, scientists have shown that a crop, in this case wheat, can control what a beneficial fungus does by sending small RNA molecules into the fungal cells. The research builds on the ground-breaking work that was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2024. "This is a big step forward for research into environmentally friendly pesticides in agriculture. If we can influence how the sRNA molecules are sent in the future, we can use it to optimize our crop protection not only in wheat but also in other crops", says Mukesh Dubey "It is very exciting to see how plants and beneficial fungi can communicate in this way. This discovery brings us one step closer to a future where we can develop crops that have stronger defense systems of their own. It would be a perfect way to make biological control organisms more effective and agriculture less dependent on chemical pesticides, says Ramesh Vetukuri. 🌽 Valuable progress in agriculture research! #TeamBayer researchers have found a way to artificially inoculate tar spot, a difficult fungal disease that affects corn crops, in field test plots. This is a big step forward in managing this disease, which can seriously affect corn yields. 🌾 By creating these controlled conditions, we can better study tar spot and develop new corn hybrids with enhanced tolerance. This innovative approach helps us move from the lab to real-world applications more effectively. How do you think this advancement will impact our ability to protect crops and ensure food security? 🌱🔬

While widespread use of insecticides has been implicated in the decline of beneficial insect populations, however a new research published in Science suggests that hundreds of noninsecticidal agricultural chemicals could be negatively affecting insect populations too. In other words " It's not only insecticides that affect insects. Other chemicals could be disrupting insect behavior as well" Editor’s summary Modern insect populations are exposed to a soup of agrochemicals composed of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides, among others. Although many of these compounds have been tested singly, and for lethality, they neither occur in nature alone nor only affect animals through mortality. Gandara et al. screened more than 1000 agrochemicals in a fruit fly model and found that a majority of these molecules had behavioral effects at sublethal levels and even more compromised survival after acute exposure. When they combined agrochemicals at field-realistic levels, the authors observed widespread changes to larval development, behavior, and reproduction. These results suggest that agrochemical exposure, even at sublethal levels, is affecting insect populations. —Sacha Vignieri https://lnkd.in/e_Vp4DtX
