This person knows the strategy, understands the culture, and is a strong leader that people know and trust. You need to develop a strong relationship with this person because they are going to help you stay grounded and realistic when the stuff hits the fan. It’s not that they tell you everything and keep you apprised of the scuttlebutt. And they certainly don’t tell you what you want to hear. They tell you what you need to hear. You need someone who would be willing to come to you and say, “Hey, this company needs a CEO today, and you’re not acting like one.” And then you need the wisdom to say, “Okay, tell me how.” https://lnkd.in/gj4yr59w

Happy Monday All, On Wednesday of last week, I had the pleasure of running a sales training workshop at the NatWest Accelerator hub in Bristol. I was joined by Jack Thompson and Richard Lowe CIPD, The Training Alchemist and together we discussed some key sales conundrums that get in the way of business growth. The event was based on a fireside chat with two entrepreneurs Michael Berger and Harry Cobbold who shared their business and journey with us. We then extracted the key issues they have faced and discussed them further with the founders who attended the event. In the post today I wanted to share the key messages that stood out for me. 1. Sales is all about helping your prospect to solve a problem. Take out the image of a used car salesman out of your head, enjoy the journey, ask open end questions and grow your business. 2. Don't give up easily, getting that big customer may take a long time but you can get lots of others in the meantime whilst learning and developing. 3. Make sure that you qualify every opportunity and understand the value it brings to your prospect, their worries and buying process. 4. Be clear on the value you bring and the products you offer. Not every opportunity is right for you. To summarise, my favourite piece of advice from Michael was, keep going and follow the process with its ups and downs. A SUMMARY IF YOU DON’T HAVE TIME TO LISTEN: Credit market too complacent. Docs are so much worse than they have been historically. Unwind may be more protracted this time. Defaults will def spike. Spreads are too tight - and they will widen whether there is a hard landing/recession or not. A credit event is coming. Currently not being compensated for the risk in credit. 95% of entrants into private credit have jumped in post GFC. So they’ve never known anything other than cheap money & have never experienced a default cycle. There will be a distressed cycle this time. Mean reversion to 4% long term default means we double from current low 2% in bonds and up from high 2% in lev loans. But they expect higher than 4%. Invest with experienced investors who were around before the GFC and have lived through high ref rates and historic default cycles. Provision of capital solutions will be the best opportunity seen in well over a decade. YOU CAN’T TRUMP EXPERIENCE.
