BRE has joined forces with other industry leaders Better Buildings Partnership, The Carbon Trust, CIBSE, The Institution of Structural Engineers, LETI, RIBA, RICS, and UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) to champion this initiative. This free-to-access cross-industry standard for #netzerocarbon aligned buildings enables the #construction industry to robustly prove that built assets align with the UK’s #carbon and #energy budgets. A new building era is being launched. In the same week, → the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) has been approved by the European Parliament Plenary. → the Déclaration de Chaillot got signed by 70 countries (of which the US and UAE), agreeing on the key role of the building industry in reducing global world emissions and adapting to a changing climate. What does it mean? The Déclaration de Chaillot is a first. Signing countries agreed → on the role of buildings in climate change. → to establish new construction and energy regulations to achieve a low-carbon built environment. The EPBD sets the pace for Europe’s buildings decarbonisation. → Whole Life Carbon targets will be mandatory from 2027 for an application in 2030. → Whole Life Carbon reporting will be mandatory from 2030. → Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) → complete phase-out of fossil fuel boilers by 2040. During the last DBI (Decarbonising the Building Industry) event, June 28, 2024, UNSW Sydney hosted the Concrete Decarbonisation Forum, bringing together experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to drive sustainable concrete production. Key presentations included:   DBI Initiative: Global collaboration to decarbonise the building industry.  Sustainable Infrastructure: Transport for NSW's net-zero emissions roadmap.  Corporate Carbon Budgets: Focus on science-based targets and Scope 3 emissions.  Low-Carbon Concrete: Innovative mixes and industry guidelines.  Procurement Strategies: Laing O’Rourke’s low-carbon targets.  Research Innovations: Various strategies for sustainable concrete solutions. Roundtable discussions addressed challenges like guidelines, communication, risk management, and the need for a shift in traditional practices. Key takeaways emphasised collaboration, clear policies, education, innovation, and market adoption to achieve sustainable concrete practices. Our UK Director of Sustainability David Kemp, recently participated in a regional roundtable discussion hosted by Building The Future Think Tank in partnership with Constructing Excellence Midlands. The discussion focused on the Midlands’ ambitious goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Key topics explored included: ✅ The significant impact of embodied carbon in construction materials. ✅ The urgent need for clearer regulations. One regulation mentioned was the proposed Part Z amendment to the building regulations, which would mandate developers to document and minimise the embodied carbon in their projects. David said: “Implementing Part Z would propel the industry forward. The Australian Flexible Pavement Association (AfPA) hosted an event aimed at advancing sustainable infrastructure with its industry briefing on low-carbon bitumen solutions, held on Friday, June 7, 2024, in Brisbane. With growing concerns about climate change, the construction sector faces increasing pressure to adopt more sustainable practices. Recognising this movement’s importance, AfPA organised the industry briefing to foster dialogue and collaboration towards achieving industry-wide decarbonisation goals. Attended by over 200 industry professionals, the event saw key stakeholders from the road construction sector participating, sharing insights and expertise on sustainable pavement solutions. Discussions revolved around identifying alternative materials and methods to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions associated with road construction and maintenance.
