🌟 What an incredible evening! Last night, I attended my first-ever panel discussion hosted by Sikhs in Law: Your Future in Corporate Commercial Law. It was an inspiring experience to hear from such accomplished professionals in the legal field. 💡 Insights from the Panel The event featured Taran Narula (Sidley Austin LLP), Rani Chowdhary (Clifford Chance), Nina Gupta (Shearman & Sterling Alumni), and Callum Gill (Macfarlanes). Each speaker shared fascinating insights into their practice areas, what makes their firm unique, and how they approach deals. It was enlightening to hear how each firm tackles challenges and fosters a culture of collaboration. 📚 Application Tips From tailoring applications to standing out in interviews, the panelists offered valuable advice for aspiring solicitors. They emphasised authenticity in applications—understanding the firm's ethos and aligning it with your values is crucial. They also stressed the importance of being proactive in seeking out opportunities to contribute, whether through collaboration, innovation, or simply showing up with a strong work ethic. 🌍 Representation Matters It was inspiring to see Sikh professionals leading the way in corporate law and encouraging others to join the field. Representation like this is crucial in shaping a more inclusive profession. I was not a super lawyer in 2013. I was, however, a super lawyer in every year from 2007 to 2012. And I have been a super lawyer every year from 2014 to the present. I plan to be a super lawyer for the rest of my career! But I was not super in 2013 (unless you ask my Mom, who has always considered me to be a super lawyer). In 2013, it seems that I forgot to log in and verify my personal information on the Reuters Super Lawyers, part of Thomson Reuters website. I'm not sure why I forgot. It just slipped through the cracks, I guess. I do recall I was moving my law office about that time, so I was a little distracted. But to try to be completely objective here, super lawyers get things done in the face of many distractions and I obviously failed that test in 2013. They say 90% of success is "just showing up." Well, in 2013, I just didn't show up on the Super Lawyers website and click the button that indicates my contact information they have on file was correct. The consequence of that error? I was not included in the 2013 list of Super Lawyers in Virginia. And I cannot truthfully say, "that I have been a Super Lawyer every year since 2007." In fact, on my own website bio (https://lnkd.in/deRJFGzP), I have had to be clever about avoiding saying something incorrect about this. I used to list the years individually until the "missing 2013" started to really stick out. I was worried people would wonder, "geesh, what happened to Kevin in 2013?" So now, you will see that I just list "Super Lawyers" under my accomplishments, without listing all the years. One year, someone from Super Lawyers contacted me for some reason. They may have been trying to sell me something, like a plaque. I said, "great, can I get your help with something, too?" I then explained what happened in 2013. "Trust me," I explained, "I really was a super lawyer in 2013. I just didn't log in and click the stupid button!" The person got back in touch with me and informed me there was nothing that could be done about 2013. That was history! In my obituary one day, I am sure it will say "he was a Super Lawyer (except for the year 2013)." Having said all that, I am very happy to report that I am a Super Lawyer in 2024 in the field of personal injury law.

𝑨𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒅 𝑺𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒔 This is a post about 'Allied Services'. One of the BIGGEST problems with the billable hour💲is this: you don't make any money 💰 when you and your team are sleeping 🛌. So how do you 'fix' 🔨 this? One way is simply not to sleep 💤. But that's not going to last too long. Another way is to write a book 📖 and hope you'll make your millions on the royalties 🤑 (and that can work, ask John Grisham). But a more recent trend is for law firms to offer clients what are known as "allied services" - or 'adjacent services'. Only, in most cases there is absolutely no aligned or adjacent service being offered. So, what is the point of this post? Well here is a tender✍ for an allied/adjacent service lots of law firms really could be offering their clients: 'Provision of Annual Member Meeting Services (AMM)'. It's not legal work, but boy does it have adjacent opportunities. And how many Big Law firms don't have events teams who are experts in project managing and holding events that they could monetarize the expertise of while leveraging and cross selling other 'allied services' - such as their lawyers? https://lnkd.in/gq8ubVF2 Bet I can guess on one hand how many law firms will go for it... Get in touch if you want to chat about the "allied services" your firm is offering. #billablehour #events #alliedservices #rft #tender #auslaw

Knowing how to provide an honest opinion and influence your client’s decision-making can set apart exceptional lawyers from those considered merely average. With appropriate guidelines in place, you shouldn't hesitate to relax the constraints on your opinions—ultimately, your client wants to hear your perspective. https://lnkd.in/gC2cxH7N #ClientRelations #DecisionMaking #ProblemSolving
