Dreaming of that plum tropical secondment on a dreamy tropical island or in an exciting international city for a client’s legal department? “Come aboard, we’re expecting you!” (the immortal Captain Stubing and Gopher). Before packing your flip flops or hiking shoes, have a look at Practical Law Global tour of international secondments requirements and the rules of the road. Bon Voyage and safe travels ahead! As the ancient saying goes, “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. (Lau Tzu). #legalpractice #legalknowhow #thomsonreuters #secondments
A law firm attorney might jump at the chance to spend time working in another country in a client's legal department. Everyone involved can benefit from an international secondment – an arrangement in which an employee (or group of employees) is temporarily assigned to work for a different part of their employer or employer's group in another jurisdiction or for a different organization in another jurisdiction. Before literally or figuratively embarking on such a journey, it's important to consider a host of related legal issues, such as mandatory local laws and acquired rights, changes to the terms and conditions of employment, and liability. Intellectual property, tax, confidentiality, and discrimination questions can arise. Thanks to these contributors, Practical Law Global subscribers have a trusted local guide for these travels. "International Secondments" is available for the following jurisdictions: Brazil by PL Global and José Carlos Wahle, Maria Luisa Soter, and Luiza Nunes Lemos, Veirano Advogados, https://lnkd.in/g9xt3zDH; Canada by Tamara Ticoll and Khalfan Khalfan, Stikeman Elliott LLP, https://lnkd.in/gdU3TDBd; France by Marijke Granier-Guillemarre, MGG LEGAL, https://lnkd.in/gMWNgSmH; Germany by Dr. Bettina Scharff and Thomas Ubber, Allen & Overy, https://lnkd.in/gHDwF44E; Hong Kong by Patricia Yeung, Howse Williams 何韋律師行, https://lnkd.in/gP228U3h; and Switzerland by Rayan Houdrouge and Kathryn Kruglak, Walder Wyss Ltd., https://lnkd.in/g2GZ8N7f. A pleasure to be ranked in the top 20 #Linkedinfluencer list, representing the indies. Thanks to my 17,300 + followers for engaging with me here on LinkedIn. This week will be a key week in #UKpolitics. On Wednesday 17 July we have the #King’sSpeech. That is not a reference to the excellent 2010 film featuring #ColinFirth, #HelenBonham-Carter and #MichaelGambon; but the formal occasion when the King, on behalf of the new UK government, will set out its #legislativeagenda and the formal #StateOpeningofParliament. Government Departments are working on more than 35 bills [draft acts of parliament] to deliver what the government describes as “an ambitious parliamentary session that will be built on a bedrock of economic security, to enable growth that will improve the prosperity of our country and the living standards of working people”. #Employmentlawyers like me are anticipating that between 5-10 of those 35 bills may relate to employment law, so Wednesday will be along day! I will publish a note on the key aspects of those draft laws when they have been published, and I have read them all. Similar to when the budget is produced when accountants and tax advisors race to publish a note on the impact, I will seek to do the same – but looking at the impact on employment law. As a quick reintroduction: #PhilipHenson (employment lawyer) I am a senior employment lawyer in London (with 20 years’ experience), who is fortunate to work with amazing national and international corporate clients (from #banks, #embassies, #financialserviceproviders, #investors, #media, #arts, #logistics, #development, and many #SME’s in their #growthphase). I also #seniorexecutives across all sectors, but usually #HNWindividuals and #industryleaders in #financialservices, #insurance, #thearts and #fashion. Outside of my busy legal practice, I seek to help the legal community in my position as President of Westminster & Holborn Law Society and as a member of the Council of the The Law Society. I have a busy family life with 2 young kids and a puppy cockerpoo (Zeus). One of my main passions is #film – #independentshortfilms in particular. Over the last 10 years, I have been privileged to have worked with talented teams to create two #awardwinning short films, and I love writing short film scripts. I have written a dark comedy short, called #VikingFuneral, which is being #developed at the moment, and which we hope to film in late 2024. I am also a jury member of the #BritishShortFilmAwards, which means that I get to see a lot of superb short films from the UK and overseas, which are a source of constant inspiration. Tell me more about what you are passionate about? #SocialMedia #Lawyers #LawFirms #LegalProfession #LegalLinkedInfluencers #film #indies #employmentlawyers #kingsspeech #draftlaw Thanks to Simon P MARSHALL Here’s a link to the report https://lnkd.in/eYWWMT4M

In this Legal Business Magazine Article Chief Executive Peter Allinson, calls on the need for US firms to move away from the norm: ''Forward-looking fee earners understand that delighting clients is the way to ensure they stick around for the longest time, and that clients are less sensitive about who delivers the quality work they receive.'' How to be a Lawyer: The US vs UK Edition - A Tale of Transatlantic Legal Shenanigans 🎩🗽 Picture this: in the US, becoming a lawyer involves a seven-year educational odyssey, complete with a heroic quest through the hallowed halls of undergrad and law school. On the flip side, in the UK, aspiring legal wizards can either tackle the law head-on with a law degree or sneak in through the back door with a conversion course. It's like choosing between a marathon and a 'choose your own adventure' book.🏃♂️📚 Now, US law firms flock to London faster than tourists to a royal wedding 👑. It's not just the fish and chips or the double-decker buses - it's the siren call of common law and the promise of crisp English accents that make the city irresistible. You see, London's like the popular kid in the finance playground - everyone wants to be its bestie. Then there's Brexit, thumping onto the scene like an awkward plot twist. But hey, London just flicked its hair and said, "I'm fabulous regardless." It remains the IT girl for US firms playing hard to get with the rest of Europe. 🇪🇺💁♀️ This cross-pond legal love story is a match made in heaven - the US flexes its litigation muscles while the UK opens doors in Europe like a seasoned butler. Together, they're a dynamic duo closing deals, winning cases, and occasionally, enjoying a good spot of afternoon tea. ☕️💼 So, let's raise a gavel to this legal dream team, making waves in the industry and occasionally having to convert inches to centimetres. It's the ultimate legal cross-cultural bromance. #LegalBanter #LawyerLife #AtlanticAmigos
