SAVE THE DATE: We are among the speakers at the round table at ECOMONDO - ITALIAN EXHIBITION GROUP on the circularity of the textile sector! On November 7th at 10:30 AM, we will be at the Rimini Fair in the Textile District (Hall B3), Workshop Area, to share our experience in circularity in the world of winter sports accessories. Organized by the Consortium Rematrix, which focuses on proactive management of textile products' end-of-life, the round table "From EPR Obligation to Strategic Opportunities: Technologies and Success Stories for Sustainable Textiles" will feature professionals from the business and academic worlds. It will be moderated by Raffaele Lupoli, Director of EconomiaCircolare.com, an Italian magazine dedicated to the circular economy. The event responds to the upcoming introduction of EPR regulations in 2025 for the textile and footwear sectors, which will face significant changes. Companies must rethink their approach to product circularity, logistics management, and traceability. However, with the right strategies and technologies, these challenges can turn into real opportunities, and technological partnerships make a difference in maximizing impact. Giuseppe Cortini from the Research and Development team will represent Level Gloves and discuss the collaboration with Sport Technology Lab and Rematrix. Other round table participants will include Enrico Soffiati, Chief Executive Officer of Rematrix; Roberto de Simone, Chief Sales Officer of RUBBER CONVERSION; Martino Colonna, Director of Sport Technology Lab (Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental, and Materials Engineering) at Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna and Chief Executive Officer of Re Sport Srl; and Andrea Giulianini, Senior Web Developer at Cloov. Redefining Sustainability Through Precision Material Science. The ISPO blog below highlights critical hurdles for fashion brands navigating sustainability, but these challenges reveal deeper systemic gaps—gaps that Balena’s BioCir® material technology is purpose-built to address. 1️⃣ Regulatory Compliance as an Ecosystem Strategy: The rise of frameworks like the CSRD and Digital Product Passport is not merely a compliance issue—it’s a signal of a new operational paradigm. Balena embodies this shift with materials engineered for traceability and biodegradability, designed to fit seamlessly into future regulatory landscapes. By integrating material science with lifecycle transparency, brands can align with—and lead—this systemic change. 2️⃣ Circularity Beyond Rhetoric: The concept of a circular economy often remains aspirational due to the inherent friction in reengineering supply chains. BioCir® challenges this inertia. As a fully compostable and recyclable material, it eliminates ambiguity in end-of-life scenarios, ensuring products are either returned to the biological cycle or reused without compromising quality or scalability. 3️⃣ Supply Chain as a Value Chain: Transparency is not just a logistical tool—it’s a currency of trust. BioCir® materials enable granular traceability, offering brands and consumers a shared narrative rooted in accountability. This transforms supply chains from opaque systems into collaborative networks, where data-driven insights support sustainability at scale. 4️⃣ The Science of Design: Design accounts for 80% of a product’s environmental impact, and Balena recognizes this with precision material engineering. BioCir® bio-based composition offers unparalleled adaptability, meeting the rigorous aesthetic and functional demands of high fashion while setting new benchmarks for sustainable design. At Balena, we believe that true innovation occurs at the intersection of science, industry, and policy. BioCir® is not just a material; it’s a system-level solution designed to integrate seamlessly into the evolving fabric of the fashion industry. The path forward is clear: sustainability is no longer a value-add—it’s the foundation of future-proofed businesses. As experts and practitioners, our collective challenge is not just to adopt but to innovate in ways that make sustainability both inevitable and irresistible. Let’s build this future together. #MaterialScience #CircularEconomy #SustainableFashion #Biocir #FashionInnovation

A few years ago, I visited Delhi NCR after the monsoon season to meet family. During my short 5-day stay, my asthma flared up, forcing me indoors with air purifiers blaring. While I had clean air, millions of Indians face AQI levels crossing 400, especially in winter. In 2024, Punjab’s pollution crisis has worsened, with air quality reaching hazardous levels due to crop burning. It’s not just Delhi; cities across northern India are battling severe pollution, with costs exceeding $30 billion annually. This issue demands bold, sustainable solutions. India's deep dependence on rice cultivation creates massive amounts of rice stubble, which is often burned, worsening pollution. The problem is complex. We realized the best solution was to develop products consumed in high volumes across industries. This led us to explore material science with a design-driven approach. Our goal was clear: starting with flexible composites, we aimed to develop a variety of composites that could be used in high-demand sectors. This strategy would drive the utilization of rice straw, discouraging the practice of burning and providing incentives for farmers to embrace a more sustainable approach. Through this journey, we, at Renewable Agricultural Waste (RAW) Materials, have developed the world’s first malleable composite made from rice straw, with the intention to start by reducing the environmental footprint of the footwear and fashion sectors, and eventually expand into automotive and construction. While our innovation efforts were recently recognized by Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차) & Royal College of Art's IMDC Royal College of Art, we’re now thrilled to share that we’re part of the @Green Grads community (https://lnkd.in/dvJRCxie). We’ll be exhibiting our innovations alongside some of the brightest green innovators at the upcoming event at Yorkton Workshops. A huge thank you to Barbara Chandler, Michael Czerwinski, and the Green Grads team, as well as the event sponsors Pearson Lloyd for supporting us on this journey. I invite everyone in my network and beyond to attend this public event, where we’ll be discussing and exhibiting solutions to drive a more sustainable future. Please like, comment, and repost this to help us spread the word! In 2024, the sustainable textile industry has become increasingly complex and confusing. With so many offers, events, studies, legislations, reports, media and experts in place, it's becoming extremely difficult for consumers to recognize what constitutes a "good" purchase decision. At W. L. Gore & Associates I was appointed to my first sustainability team in 2005 and as the Founder of BRAIND® Ingredient Brand Strategy Consulting I helped to inaugurate the first sustainable #ingredientbrand in 2012. And learned firsthand that materials are key to improving the situation (scope 3 emissions & impact). Ingredient Brands can be lighthouses in this sea of uncertainties and act as a seal of quality and trust, allowing stakeholders to recognize which central problem they are helping to solve and how. But it's not about having a nice trade show booth or a hang tag. It's about consequent brand-centric behavior at all levels of the company. This is why I'm spending the next few days at Techtextil in Frankfurt, to see if there are any new solutions and how willing companies are to implement them with the right strategy. Let's work together to make the sustainable textile industry clearer and more accessible for everyone. #sustainablefashion #brandstrategy #value #ingredientbranding Photo credit: No Kill Magazine, no author
